Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

I am so disappointed in Conoco

They treat their contractors like a third wheel even though some of them do more work than an actual employee. I understand saving a dime, but if they are doing the same work as a Conoco counterpart they should be treated with the same respect. They have gone through layoff after layoff, and now are losing the respect of the contractors who help make the business run like clockwork. Maybe time for an overhaul of the workforce. It will come back to bite, and it's gonna hurt. I feel so bad for our contractors.

I was given a 2 month notice of my layoff with COP. I was a contractor with them for 2 years. I was given a hand shake , thank you for your services & we parted ways with no hard feelings . Its just business and there is life after COP. I wish all those well whom have been laid off contractor or direct the best of luck on finding work .

Not all contractors get paid as much as you think. I took a rate rollback while everyone else was getting VCIP. I was working 200 hours a month alongside employees who would routinely show up late and leave early. My initiatives have saved hundreds of thousands of dollars through the downtown and I'm paid less than most, if not all, employees in my department.

Former contractor here, I was treated wonderfully in my time with COP. Layoffs were coming and I knew I unfortunately would end up being asked to leave, it was no surprise to me.

What did surprise me was the 6 week notice I was given. Then, even more surprising that near the end of the 6 weeks I was asked if I had another job lined up yet. I told my supervisor not yet I was still looking, so my contract was renewed until I found a position.

Very classy move, I was treated better than some employees that were escorted out, so I do not have one negative thing to say about my experience.

Why you ask? They need people that are actually willing and able to work...

O man the same contractor making more in a year than what an employee makes in two. What do you think being a contractors/consultants means? Maybe you should of saved that money instead of buying all of your fancy toys. Quit crying and move forward.

Some contractors may become entitled to benefits or even to be hired as an employee if a company treats them the same as regular employees and holds them to the same expectations over an extended period of time. Fed Ex was sued by their contractors (and lost) because they expected the same things from their contractors as their regular employees but didn't offer them the same compensation package and benefits. So because of the ruling in that case a lot of companies treat their contractors differently so that they don't get sued. More to it than that but you can research contingent workforce.

To the original poster, you do understand the word "contractor", don't you? No offense to contractors.

That's why they are contractors and not full time employees! They are expendable! Instantly if needed!

You should have saw how the contractors were treated in the WCBU. The leadership of the WCBU and all the involved should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. Usually decent companies will give their contractors 2 weeks DIRECT notice that their position is being eliminated, or they are given 2 weeks worth of wages upon immediate termination. Conoco didn't have the class to do either.
