I worked as a very highly paid manager at a store that sells items for the BED and the BATH and even items BEYOND that . This pattern begun in 2008 after the housing crisis. no more well paid management, it was time to replace all of them with $30k a year manager hopefuls. Did not pink slip, just simply said: you don't belong here, you must leave of be fired. This was systematic and more painful /sneaky than a mass layoff.

Some retailers still pay well - and, yes, you do like shopping there- do you wander why??? Costco, TJs, WFM...
