Finally got a job outside sysko after being LR'ed. Not much but just 25 % more compensation. Now I realisze how underpaid I was at sysok
Here in Raleigh there is still hiring happening. NetApp, RedHat, Citrix, MetLife, Seimens, Microsoft, Fidelity and SAS are all pulling in Cisco folks and more.
Decent pay, solid schools and low cost of living.
Found an opportunity immediately with a Cisco partner, it took over a month for it to happen, I enjoyed my time off. I never even looked, they came to me.
I was laid off and in new career after 10 years at Cisco. Got a job in the Produce section at Safeway. We have lots of jobs.
SV = Silicon Valley
@1ee0: I agree cheapism, exists. It was very shocking to me.
there is no escaping it, so what is the solution ? Make the circumstance work for you. As i said, please dont lose hope, without due diligence. If the parameters that you see are not yielding your desired results, why continue to hold on to same parameter- change them. You know your life best to evaluate and make changes. Losing hope is not a solution.
in buildings they bought from Cisco.
Ahhhh, scream! This place must be doomed! Doomed to perish.
The Glassdoor reviews are a little bit like Cisco's (awful middle management, no direction, layoffs) but NetApp is hiring in RTP. Right across the street and in buildings they bought from Cisco.
There is a chance they can turn it around or be bought out. Either scenario would be a good outcome if you can get in now and ride it out.
Some of us are NOT in SV, but it sounds like there is at least some of the same issues over there (ageism/cheapism). And I have "done my homework."
there are tons.. tons of companies in SV
What is SV?
I found a job at Home Depot in San Jose in the garden department.
Can you forward my resume, please?

Booted from Cisco in February (Marketing re-og) and still looking for employment. I have a specialized skill set so there are fewer opportunities than if I were an Engineer.
there are tons.. tons of companies in SV, who dont care about age. They are begging for skills . Please do your homework, before losing hope.
I get the interview and am usually interviewed first. I then find out a much younger person gets the job. I think they use Cisco as a benchmark how to hire cheaper
I'm in the same situation.
I wish I could. I'm out of work 10 months now. I'm over 40, and I'm not in the SV area. The market is brutal where I am and I have great experience, tons of awards and great references. I am constantly toms that I'm "overqualified." Hmm I guess that's code for too old.
I'm trying to convince my significant other that we need to move because there are too many recent grads who are smart and will work for nothing in this area. Thanks for listening to my rant.
I'm very good at what I do and I can't find
Anyone who will hire me.
