"Today Intel has its own growing fabrication business that might one day bake modem chips that go inside iPhones. Intel’s next generation modem, the 7460, will very likely be fabricated at Intel using the company’s 14nm process. That’s likely to help create a smaller and more efficient modem for the iPhone"

Intel will win because Qualcomm is dumb.

The real reason is Intel gave Apple a low price, which increased Apples margins and gave them leverage against Qualcomm. It definitely wasn't because Intel has a better product. It definitely wasn't for the consumer benefit and the Intel phones will not be portable to many other carriers.

I would not call Intel a passing fad. It is wishful thinking. I heard that a number of modem engineers went to Intel way before last year's layoffs.

If Intel can make modems, why can't we make server chips? Seems like it should work both ways, unless the top management is asleep at the wheel.

Intel is a passing fad. Qualcomm's modem will reign supreme.

Do we stand a chance in 5G? Layoffs in our modem stronghold too?
