Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Health Care Options

Health care and insurance is really confusing... how long do we keep our High Deductible Health Plan after layoffs? Someone mentioned that Cobra is cr-p and that I should just jump on Obamacare. I read on here that you can look to the market for a new plan.

Call 'Obamacare' what you want. It was half as expensive for my family as COBRA. But go on, keep paying for COBRA.

Obamacare is crap! It's socialized INSURANCE not health CARE. Why does the govt. force citizens to buy health insurance? It's a tax people! It's a penalty and a side effect of the uninformed voting public world we live in. REPEAL the darn thing already

You could drop COBRA and save lots of money by going on the health care marketplace and dealing with something a lot of people call 'Obamacare' ... or you could be a s---er, decide you don't want anything to do with 'Obamacare', and end up paying thousands of dollars more than you have to with COBRA. The choice is up to you....

Found a plan on Obamacare for less than half of what COBRA was charging. COBRA is a ripoff, drop it as fast as you can. If you're in the market for a high-deductible plan (which is what you SHOULD be looking for), there will be values out there on the marketplace. Low deductible plans end up charging you tar too much for the first $5000-$8000 of coverage (like half or more).

Current plan lasts till the end of the month of your last day.

There's no hurry, because you can get COBRA coverage retroactive within 60 days. So if you get sick, pay up and be covered.

You pay the actual cost plus 5% Current 2016 HDHP rates:

1 person $432.48....1 + 1 person $929.22....1 + 2 or more Persons $1,317.84 .....

Dental and Vision cost more

I plan to go to the market and price an equivalent policy, then compare it to COBRA coverage price.

I doubt I'll go to Obamacare, they are losing suppliers and raising rates lately.

I have been on my former employers cobra (Cigna) for 9 months same as if you were employed, just multiply by 10 times the cost or 20 with spouse. 18 months is the limit. It hurts big time!!
