Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Why do you stay at Conoco Phillips?

If things are as bad as characterized on this site, why not leave? Take your rage and negativity and find a productive way to channel it. Go to therapy. Take up a hobby. Find another employer that you actually like. Why would you torture yourself with working for a company you hate? Whining on this site does nothing.

I'm waiting for them to close Bartlesville and transfer me to Houston! Then life will be much better!

Money and vacation time. In Calgary you'll have to accept much less money IF you can find somewhere to hire you. For my family moving isn't realistic at this time. I'm here until the market recovers or they show me the door.

Between RSUs, 401K matching, bonuses, pension/cash account, relocation allowances, COP used to be a great money train! However, the good days are over and the current trend definitely points to compensation reductions.

To the previous poster. You must have been on a salary of over 15,000 CAD after taxes to save about 8,000 CAD every month. You are part of those milking the company. Majority of the worker bees earn around half your salary in a month.

to the previous poster....i have worked almost ten years an have saved plenty of money. (~900K). You only have yourself to blame, you work for an oil company so I know your paycheck is a healthy amount. Based on how much you seem to blow your money you might deserve a seat in the prestigous ELT, hell you could be CEO, he seems to be good at wasting money. You should mention this to your supervisor at your year end review.

Ten years with COP doesn't set you up for life. Who is dedicated enough to save that much money after taxes and other deductions from your paycheck? Who is disciplined enough to not improve their standard of living when their wage increases? Very few people have that dedication and discipline. I know many people that have been working more than ten years and are not anywhere close to being able to retire (be set for life). This includes the vast majority of the people in the oilfield. Several of those I know can get by after significantly reducing expenses and cutting back. We stay on the treadmill and keep working because we squander our money and don't save enough.

I am so outta here once the industry turns around again. The only think keeping me is that I do not want to jump too early and end up somewhere worse. It is just a matter of time now. The jobs are starting to get posted again and the headhunters have started calling around to reconnect with us so they have candidates for jobs. I agree with the previous poster that it will be just a few new hires left, plus some old timers who don't want to try hard to go get anything better. We will see how Smart Growth and Superior Returns looks when there is no one left to row the boat. I guess I am a bit jaded now. I have lost my faith in the management of this company to do anything right. Just compare our stock performance to the that of our peers.

to the poster, if you do it for the love of the company you are sadly misguided. They will dump you when needed or replace you with cheaper younger or foreign labor if you get too old. The company only looks out for itself, so every employee should do the same. As far as i can tell from people i know most are ready to flee COP when the rebound comes. I hope this company realizes that they will be stuck with a group of new hires if things do turn around.

To me it is only business, i will gladly take what they pay me until a better opportunity comes along. We all need to be patient until that time comes.

Basically, you sell your soul. Pay and benefits are pretty great and hard to beat. JWpf7s6-1rcn sums it up perfectly. I put in 10 years at COP and I'm set for life. In hind site, it feels like I sold out. However, the compensation is really outstanding.

I need to correct the last comment it's more like being in an abusive relationship to a rich woman, she beats you down but she keeps yourpockets full of money. The divorce will come at the right time.
