Thread regarding Cabela's Inc. layoffs

Prediction

Press release sounds great, but we have Q4 to get through. They need us to be happy and hopeful so we bring in the big bucks in the Q4 season. Predictions. Oshkosh, closed. Sidney Corporate, closed. 150-200 employees selected for offers to relocated to Springfield. Severance offered to the rest, probably just before bonus is supposed to pay out. Severance of 90 days pay. Longer if manager but not much. Home values drop by 50% or more. Sidney DC might stay open. Would be surprising because already so hard to keep staffed - city locations work better for DC. Sidney retail remains for now. Low wage positions mostly. Some stores closed depending on market. New corporate building leased out but probably low wage jobs. Tax base drops as housing declines. School registration drops. Teachers are cut. Grades consolidated in larger school buildings to save money. Small businesses close. Hospital cuts staff. The list could go on and on.

The reward for waiting and loyalty is this. It's too late to get away from the affects now. Thanks, guys. Hard to believe you've been looking us in the eyes every day.

I'm glad you got a laugh out of that, if you couldn't tell I was being 100% facetious.

"Maybe Jim will set up a charitable trust with his $1 billion dollars and bail everyone out, that is the only saving grace Sidney has left."

I don't know why I laughed so loud at that. It is not like employees of Cabelas are really family. The company taught me that we are 100% replaceable.

I seen the writing on the wall around June. I got the hell out and made sure my family was secure. It used to be that loyalty was rewarded. Cabela's lost that, along with a core set of values that made them wonderful. Once those values were corrupted, that is when the downfall came. I loved working for Cabela's, and the people there. However, I could not put my family through the uncertainty and ultimate betrayal that was forthcoming. ( I never drank the Kool-Aid )

I can tell you now that almost everyone in IT will be laid off within the next 120 to 180 days. Then you will see the HR department, Accounting, etc... Bass Pro will take some time to assimilate the IT systems, and then the mass layoffs will begin.

I promise to pay homage at the tombstone marking the town of Sidney after the next 2 years! Remember, this is about profit, not about morals.

I just hope the good employees at Cabela's do not get taken in by all the talk and get hurt even more. The folks up top will do whatever it takes to maintain the cash flow until the deal is finished and the store location and personnel structure is figured out.

As the revenue drops (and it will) you will see layoffs and other actions to compensate. As a private company Bass Pro will not be required to make public all the numbers. If you could see how much money is being allocated for the merger it would indicate some of the possible plans. While you have not seen much communication from senior management, you will be buried now. Everything possible will be done to keep staff in place until they can get things positioned. You will probably see incinitives to stay for a period of time. These may be compelling but keep in mind the job market is very tight, if you have an opportunity for a position, take it. There may be some severance offered initially but that will only be for the first couple of rounds of layoffs. Bass Pro has already paid a premium for the company why should they put more money in, business is business.

Worked acquisitions and mergers for a large corporations for a number of years, Had the pleasure of working at Cabela's for a few years. Pains me to see such a great company ruined.

I think Tommy himself wrote that last reply. WAKE UP! There is no such thing as the selling party determining a stipulation in the sale of a company. Anti-trust powers demand stipulations sometimes such as closing certain stores to maintain fair competition etc etc. Johnny Morris didn't pay $5.5 billion to operate Cabela's and BP separately. Only he could afford to pay that much because he can immediately cut combined operating expenses by laying off redundant departments ... accounting, payroll, supply chain, merchandising, the list goes on and on if you work at corporate. Sure by nearly doubling in size themselves, BP will need to take on additional staff in each of these areas but it will be a small percentage of the people that currently work for Cabela's in Sidney. It may take a year or even two but eventually the majority of people working for corporate will have been laid off with very little severance and a home worth 50% of its previous value. Maybe Jim will set up a charitable trust with his $1 billion dollars and bail everyone out, that is the only saving grace Sidney has left.

Something this big may have a carrot or 2 you don't see. Rumor by some is a stipulation to keep a good percentage of workforce in Sidney for a designated period of time. Like until Jim and marry join d--k. Cabelas family had some say in this outcome and want to be painted in good light rather than like crooks and users when the Sidney epitaph is written.

Tommy will retire but be on Best Buy and other boards

Ralph will hang around a while and retire move to a farm in Ne country.

Jim will move and travel with his wife and Mary will stay in Denver thinking about good old days.

Cabelas will be a footnote in history and bass pro will always be there to claim the throne of outdoor retailer master.

It was fun but not for last 3 years. Life support is what we have until the cuts start taking shape after 4th qtr.

I have to agree with a lot of this. I left 2.5 years ago. So thankful and blessed that I did and was able to find solid work elsewhere. It appears the prices on houses already has sunk. All with green arrows pointing down indicating a price drop. Know that historically companies want to make you warm and fuzzy. Don't fall for it. If you can, get out now. There is a LOT to consolidate and that will take some time, but not a lot.

That severance isn't going to be a lot especially for the lower tier corporate personnel.

You are right. Unfortunately the terminology used currently offers hope and trust me all the execs will have a huge incentive to finish out the year in good shape. They are thieves in the night onto others opportunities to ruin and plunder.

Love your post. Employees should start applying for jobs outside of Nebraska now- don't wait. Difficult decisions ahead for employees, married couples that both work for them and businesses
