On Vacation During Layoffs

Can someone please explain the logic to me behind people booking vacation that aligns with the time frame in which the layoffs are to be executed? You will not be spared if you're on the list, your notice will be waiting for you upon your return. Your coworkers will lose respect for you and think you're an idiot and a coward.

Layoffs are happening at the end of summer, most of those vacations were likely already booked and travel paid for. I was on vacation last round due to that exact reason. No sense in losing money on a trip just to be told you have no job. Life goes on even in the face of layoffs.

Yes, you get paid for all unused vacation including any that have carried over from a previous year. It gets paid out in a lump sum a few days after your employment ends. This is true regardless of how you leave the company...lay off, resignation, retirement. Even those that get fired get their vacation paid out.

I have no idea though why the OP or anyone else would interpret someone on vacation during the notification weeks (past, present, or future) as cowardly, weak, stupid or whatever. I don't think anyone believes you can avoid layoff with vacation time or calling in sick. If your number is up, the layoff will find you and you will be notified. You can't cheat the grim reaper out of death and you can't escape a layoff once you've been selected. I think you have to give people the benefit of the doubt here - if they're on vacation, they really are. Not a cowardly avoidance strategy. Plenty of other conspiracies out there to go investigate.

Do you get paid for "banked" vacation?

In my case, the last two rounds of layoffs both just happened to fall at the same time as vacation trips that had been planned months in advance, well before the layoff schedules were announced. I'll be damned if these morons are going to control my personal life to the extent that I'll cancel living it because they're incapable of turning a profit. What's going to happen will happen, I assure you life will go on regardless.

How abouts you focus on getting laid while off on vacation. Think positive.

This is just dumb. If you get laid off you get paid for unused vacation.

Been there, done that. Might as well live the part of your life you can control as you want.

It's called weak and selfish. If you can't handle the stress of a layoff, then you are in the wrong industry.

Maybe it was booked before the idiotic unpredictable company announced it? Ah that makes sense.

You get paid for your vacation even if you don't use it. Maybe the boss's of these people have indirectly informed them they are safe

If you're about to be laid off, it makes sense to use whatever vacation you have left instead of work your last few weeks for the same pay. I doubt anyone's doing it with the hopes of being 'spared'.
