Those that think they are safe at any level are not being honest with themselves. Even if you knew of the layoffs and put names forward doesn not mean you are safe. It means they are getting you to do work till the last day. All employees will be looked at very closely. Wage, rank, skill set, behaviors, are you replaceable for less and on and on and on. When your number is up, it's up.

No one is safe, especially in a culture where it is believed that all Geologists are good Petrophysicist. It all depends on your Manager or Supervisor though. They have to rank the workers in order of importance. Most Managers would tell you the selection for Layoffs is not yet done even though the list have been submitted to HR. Body language speaks more volumes than what you are told. I wish you the best.
