Warning: Employees Doing Building Maintenance

Too the poster that stated they are replacing floor tiles. YOU NEED TO STOP THIS IMMEDIATELY AND CALL OSHA OR THE HEALTH DEPT. Floor tiles and/or adhesive in a lot of these older stores contain ASBESTOS. I was a QMT for 22yrs and did building maintenance until my job was eliminated the first of May this year. QMT's across the nation were cut. There is ASBESTOS in different areas of these stores and no one should be doing any kind of construction or destruction unless you know what you are dealing with and it has been tested.

I have worked at Kmart for a long time at different stores. The store i m in now was built in the 1960s. When signs are hung it is also with the plastic clips on the metal dividers. Last year they had a few workers clean out a room in the back and the whole floor was damaged. Tiles were broken all over. They had them sweep in up and empty the whole room. I checked our asbestos notice, which again was only put up a week and a half ago and it seems that it might be through out the whole store.

Someone had mentioned that those of us from stores that are having these problems with things like this should contact each other and see what can be done. I know that mart has never been the best but now it just seems that they dont care about their employees at all. It is right that there are people that count on their job and dont want to call OSHA and get shut down so something else needs to get done any suggestions?

I just put up a large post under the post "Warning: Employees Doing Building Maintenance" on the Sears layoff section. The store that i m at was built in the 1960s. There were employees last year that had to clean out a backroom where the floor was damaged. The whole floor was broken up and they cleaned the whole thing out. There also employees there that worked at another store and took that store down when it closed. There were tiles broken and there was a room where they kept shelving where there was no ceiling. You could look straight up and when light was in the room you could see dust particles falling. They had spent hours in there cleaning it out.

As far as the heat. I know how you feel. It is so hot in the damn store and the only time that they tried to fix it was when there was a corporate visit. It got so hot in the store that all of our chocolate on shelves was melting. Bars of chocolate were all folded.

As for favoritism lol do you work at my store. The same thing happens. The HR is a complete joke but those that are friends with him get the hours and do nt do anything. They get hours but the people that are actually needed to work on the floor and stock the shelves are given 4 hours a day even on truck days.

I hate to say it but you have a valid point. Moving the shelves, ect on a pre 1990 store could cause problems.

Don't the employees take the building down to the original footprint when a store closes? It would seem to me that those employees would be exposed to the most danger because they are creating a lot of dust and stirring dust that may have set for years.

Poster was posted but means nothing....floor tiles have been replaced. Employees have ask about the asbestos management reply was "we are not breaking the tiles"...what the heck, how did they replace the tiles, they were broken, dah...Also the store is miserable hot in the summer, darn cold in the winter....won't allow fans or heaters...But ok to have in the office for their comfort...Will be resigning shortly..so glad....How the associates are treated..Management has the associates so scared that they will do anything they ask them to do knowing its not right but will not speak up or challenge anything...plus so much favoritism its unbelievable....

You are completely right , the store I was at was built in 1978 and it had abestous floor tiles. Depending on each store there should have been an Asbestos report from SHC either in the employee break room or the office. This has gotten out of hand ALL stores need to call OSHA or the health department NOW.

Employees should not put their health in danger due to the extreme cost cutting these stores are doing.

SHC does not give a rats A$$ about employee health.

Thank you former QMT.
