While knowing nothing specific about the project, the Des Plaines Kmart in Illinois is currently being remodeled. As the latest concept store, employees from stores over 100 miles away have been commuting for several weeks to assist in this project (receiving overtime for their troubles). The remodel is continuing this week; beyond that, outsiders remain in the dark.

Kmart needs a lot of work, but it needs to put its "members" first. Walking through a store there is no employees in sight. Empty counters, lack of recovery, and abandoned garden centers, discourage the desire to spend money, Kmart flow of merchandise is also in needs of a makeover, lets face it, Kmart's dedicated customer is a dying breed .. time to get with the times, updated contemporary collections, trendy gadgets, fun environment, wifi, and better Ad and signing .. 1990 was almost 3 decades ago..
Unless it is a REIT store you can bet Eddie is not putting any money into it.
Some might be remodeling for new tenants who will take over the lease. Check the paint colors and layout to see
Very funny you mention this. This Kmart is one of the training stores for new store managers, because of its proximity to Hoffman Estates. And our DM and i presume many others are in Hoffman all this week for meetings. A couple weeks ago while our DM was in our store, I overheard him saying that he would be in Des Plaines for a grand opening on August 8. Usually right after those district manager meetings is when the cuts/changes occur. Could be next week to coincide with 2nd quarter financial results due the 18th.
It's called concentrating on the best stores.
