Thread regarding Kmart layoffs

Merchandise

Our store has still not received anything for Halloween thanksgiving or Christmas yet. We had already got a ton by this time last year, are other stores the same way?

Which sized Floor Tiles contain Asbestos?

Tile that contains asbestos12-inch by 12-inch or 9-inch by 9-inch vinyl or asphalt Floor Tile…

OSHA says all asphalt or vinyl floor tile installed prior to 1980 is Presumed (PACM) to contain asbestos unless sampling proves otherwise. Pretty much all 9-inch by 9-inch contains some amount of asbestos. Typically, it contains less than 5% Chrysotile asbestos. It is common for 12-inch by 12-inch to also contain asbestos especially if it was installed prior to 1980. It is usually less than 3% Chrysotile asbestos.

Asbestos was used in a lot of different building materials. Do not put your safety or anyone else at risk unless you have the facts. It was also used in the 12inch tiles and in the adhesive/glue.

Serpentine minerals have a sheet or layered structure. Chrysotile is the only asbestos mineral in the serpentine group. In the United States, chrysotile has been the most commonly used type of asbestos. According to the U.S. EPA Asbestos Building Inspectors Manual, chrysotile accounts for approximately 95% of asbestos found in buildings in the United States.[citation needed] Chrysotile is often present in a wide variety of products and materials, including:

Chlor Alkali diaphragm membranes used to make chlorine (currently in the USA) [52]

Drywall and joint compound

Plaster

Gas mask filters pre 1960s

Mud and texture coats

Vinyl floor tiles, sheeting, adhesives

Roofing tars, felts, siding, and shingles[53]

"Transite" panels, siding, countertops, and pipes

Popcorn ceilings, also known as acoustic ceilings

Fireproofing

Fire-resistant asbestos glove.

Caulk

Industrial and marine gaskets

Brake pads and shoes

Stage curtains

Fire blankets

Interior fire doors

Fireproof clothing for firefighters

Thermal pipe insulation

Filters for removing fine particulates from chemicals, liquids and wine

Dental cast linings

HVAC flexible duct connectors

Drilling fluid additives

Wow about the asbestos. Someone did post that nine inch floor tiles were the only ones made with asbestos.

You are completely right , the store I was at was built in 1978 and it had abestous floor tiles. Depending on each store there should have been an Asbestos report from SHC either in the employee break room or the office. This has gotten out of hand ALL stores need to call OSHA or the health department NOW.

Employees should not put their health in danger due to the extreme cost cutting these stores are doing.

SHC does not give a rats A$$ about employee health.

Thank you former QMT.

From everyone on the board thank you former QMT maintence tech. This extreme cost cutting had gotten out of control.

Too the poster that stated they are replacing floor tiles. YOU NEED TO STOP THIS IMMEDIATELY AND CALL OSHA OR THE HEALTH DEPT. Floor tiles and/or adhesive in a lot of these older stores contain ASBESTOS. I was a QMT for 22yrs and did building maintenance until my job was eliminated the first of May this year. QMT's across the nation were cut. There is ASBESTOS in different areas of these stores and no one should be doing any kind of construction or destruction unless you know what you are dealing with and it has been tested.

Well, if they want employees doing maintence also. Then the store use budget will be through the roof, if you have to buy plumbing supplies, caulk, ect at Home Depot/Lowes. If you cannot get it off the shelf at the store to store use it

And have to use "petty cash" to buy things as in supplies to fix things, that is getting desperate.

I understand stripping registers for parts how can you strip an RMU for parts? I understand with a 4 high you can strip shelves off it? How do you strip your pallet jack? Does this mean all Kmarts got their copier taken away or just certain stores? How long ago did the copier get "repossed"?

Plus they want employees to be handymen/woman to fix things?

Is this effective for all Kmarts also?

We strip registers, pallet jacks, four highs, copiers, and even RMU's. Our store does not get anymore replacement equipment (I wonder if this means we are closing). We have been taking parts from other equipment for the last few years. We now have to repair small things around the store ourselves like minor plumbing, fixing doors, caulking, replacing floor tiles, replacing ceiling tiles etc/ They took our only copier away because the contract ran out and we are not getting another one. We were told not to copy anything unless absolutely neccessary and if we needed to copy to go to Staples or some other store or to do it at home. Ha, ha, like someone is going to use their own ink on this company. Oh well just waiting for the end.

Wow, my store closed in Jan of 2014, I though things were bad. Things have only gotten worse, in order to make things run jerry rigging things is what you have to do. Do you have one or two registers in your store you strip for parts by chance?

To answer this question. The only reason SHC put new pin pads at Kmart is due to the identity/credit card theft at the stores. That is the only reason.

No need to apologize. You have not been properly indoctrinated into the SHC corporate think yet. Corporate think says that if it makes sense don't do it, if it will help the customer or the employee...don't do it, if it could help the company in the long run---Don't do it.

But if you can squeeze a little more out of the employee, i.e. work a little harder, a little faster, lift a little more with less people. etc. And whatever you do keep everything you do secret, give no real answer to real questions and always say that everything is fine and dandy.

Now, if you can make something from the 1990's last with duct tape and spit, if you can get more credit card sign-ups even if the customer gets angry, if you can push one more extended warranty, if you can get one more email, one more sign-up... If you can cut just one more hour of payroll or one more lead, or run your store with new employees every six weeks because everyone gets sick of this place--- then and only then will you be truly drinking the SHC kool-aid and you will be like us. Welcome to the Crazy Train

Sorry for the dumb idea, I forgot that SHC has screwed things up so bad. I was thinking from both the customers and employee point of view.

Who will move these shelves? We barely have enough people to stock the shelves much less move and stock. And if we do that, as we did one year with some seasonal items we wanted to display, some DM will come in and scream we are not following the playbook or the POG. Managers have no say in how they run their store, even though they know their customer and their needs best. Everything is run from corporate with a written process to follow.

Instead of trying to use "filler" items for the shelves, why not if there is a whole back half of the store empty, move the shelves to cover up the empty part of the store. Does that make sense?

That is sickening, to know the store that your transferring stuff out to is going to close. Yet the employees at that store are told it is not closing is unethical on so many levels.

Sometimes they don't even tell you ahead of time. Back when the last round started in May, we had to send stuff out to 2 different closing stores but were told not to call, email or tell them anything about the merchandise coming. They had not even been notified they were closing yet ! To have a store that is closing yet is the last one to hear about it is like something right out of the Jerry Springer show. What a joke this whole company and all its executives are.

That would make sense, has your store started getting "crap" in from other stores for your possible closing sale.

We have no Halloween where in years past we would have at least 10 pallets of stuff ready to put out. Our back to school is only a few ailes in the store with a few quads when in years past it would be almost all of where our summer stuff was. we also have 60-70 patio sets with 30-40 grills and other seasonal things when in years past almost all would be gone by now. Wondering if people are used to getting 75-90 percent off and they are waiting until the last minute to buy.

Well, maybe if you could sell the remaining furniture and grills at 95% off that would clear out room for Halloween?( Yes I am being a JA and not serious.)

Could some vendors not ship since they do not want to extend credit to SHC.

Regarding vendors... a huge chunk of seasonal comes from one vendor. If that vendor has delays in shipments for production or other reasons, obviously everything isn't going to arrive at one time.

This is not good at all, if SHC has not sent halloween or Xmas maybe the vendors will not extend credit and make sure all shipments are paid in full before shipping is my guess?
