evidently there is a common theme of commiting the sin of being older than 50. think karma.

Well I am a software engineer, was recently laid off, I guess my sin I was being over 50. Had plenty of work, and not in the engineering software.

ditto - software grade B6 : asked to go.

They value junior people over older/senior ones. Partly simply age preference, partly management being fooled that young developers, being more hooked in to the new fads, are going to build more glitzy snazzy stuff. Older guys just see the software hype cycle revolving every decade or so and want to concentrate on the fundamentals. Not so sexy.

Software (in particular engineering software) is not as important in Schlumberger as hardwasre or project management with a result that much of the software transformation efforts in the last few years have been aping the wrong things - managers in awe of Steve Jobs, Apple, Google, 'Innovation' (jeez.. learn people - you can foster Innovation by having good people get stuck in to the details for quite a while and leave them to it - you can't generate it with mickey mouse competitions ) ..,

SLB should concentrate on control systems, real time programming, algorithms - the core stuff - don't think everything is going to end up as an app or micro-service. Emulate Boeing flight management systems, NASA, manufacturing systems, nuclear power plant management systems - things that are safety/time critical. Design good internal interfaces. Then you can cloak it in some web stuff if you like. Don't do things the other way around.

Depends where in IT. Service desk that does very little has lost less than 10% and adds lots of NPT to everyone.
