We were all told this morning that everyone in the store has to have open availability or you will be let go effective immediately. They say part timers now have to be available at least 16 hours and be able to work every weekend. There's some kind of waiver that can be sent to Sydney for approval but they said they probably wouldn't be approved. Any body else get this speach?

That's odd considering I hear some of them folks are scheduled through the 11th. Guess Cabela's has to stick to their rules of "blindsiding" huh?!?!
No open availability on weekends means your last day is June 3rd.
So has anyone been let go for not changing their availability yet? Where is June 3rd coming from?
The new policy of availability is just another way to state that the Big Man controls you. The people that work for big corporations are disposable at any time. There is no way Cabela's can survive if your employees don't believe in the company. So Cabela's has made it's choice and you are not valued by your love of the outdoors only buy the visas you sell. Sorry to say but their should be a National Cabela's Walkout day on June 3rd, buy all employees , to show the Big wigs how they are actually hurting the company.
i am so sorry to hear the bum rap handed to you i wish you the best and good luck in the future.
I've worked for Cabelas before the store opened, my 10 year is next month. They offer me a a full time position in another department, have to make a decision in 1 day. I accept the (so called position). Then within a couple days they cancel the position. I have to make a decision to work part time or quit within a day now. I now only work 20 hours a week, lost my seniority, and benefits. Cabelas is making me physically sick.
Our store is so hard up for help that we lay off great employees and a week later we are offering a bounty to get new hires. WTF are they thinking? Now they drop this new availability crap on us and think they will get us to recommend family and friends to work for this hell hole? By far the best part is the posting of a new sign near our location that states we are looking for help and that we have "FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES"
How can this even be legal? They don't want you to write on the waiver that you have another job. It will be thrown away. So they want people to survive on part time hours @ a minimum of 16 hours now?? Plus they won't pay your earned vacation if you don't sign the availability update. This company has gone to sh--. I want to contact a local news station and let everyone know what they really stand for.
You can use racial, ethnic and sexual slurs and the management is OK with it. Say union and you're gone.
As long as you are open to being fired. All you have to do is start mentioning the word union and see what they do.
It's time, that management reallised who is paying them. It's the people on the floor. Wouldn't it be nice, if every single floor outfitter called off on 1 day in every store? Would love to see that happen and would love to see the faces of higher management
Most of us are unaffected by the change. Those that are have 30 days to adjust and if they cannot there is a way to get an exception approved. Not exactly sure how, but it's an option. I really don't think this is about running people off or else the exception option wouldn't exist.... I just started last year PT coming from another big box retailer. I'm a happy camper in camping : )
All I can say is wow. How long before the mutiny starts , just kidding. How long before there is a mass exodus of people, or is their plan to have copuis amounts of people leave, prior to to the terminations.
Not trying to start an argument, I have seen this heavy handed technique before and the results are never to pleasant. In the end all the good people move on and all that is left is .......
This is just another case of someone sitting behind their big desk, getting paid big bucks and making decisions to justify their job. They have no clue what goes on in the stores!
New company S.O.P. standard operating procedure.
Calling it a policy doesn't make it right. Some respect and consideration for the Outfitters might be nice.
New company policy. All stores.
is this just at one location or is it company wide?
Loads of part timers quitting in my store due to this new requirement. For the wages they pay us thank god there are plenty of other places to work at that will be more flexible.
welcome retail.... We work weekends.
Peel is such an a--hole that she cannot stand up for the outfitters and do the right thing.
Where is she on nights, weekends and off hours?
Oh with her kid breast feeding. A different set of rules for her and Scott.
There was a time when former management had the balls to stand up for the Hamburg store employees and do the right thing.
Of course all of them are gone and moved on!
They don't staff properly now. How can being open availability for both weekend days change anything. Managers complain about foot traffic down, open your eyes. If you have no staff to help them, they stop shopping at Cabelas and go to Wally World. Just getting quality old timers out to make room for new low paid Outfitters. Problem is, word is out there and they can't hire anyone.
The Hamburg store was given $32 million in tax breaks and the Pennsylvania tax payer paid $5.2 million for road improvements for building the store.
Cabela's promised to employ 400 full time workers and another 200+ part time and seasonal employees to get that monster tax break.
The approvals were all based about creating quality jobs for the area.
They broke every promise they made.
They have dishonored their agreements and still treat their employees poorly.
Legendary mistreatment of employees at the World's Foremost mismanaged company.
In response to the "Common sense regular Outfitter" -
I feel with your common sense "blinders" on, you would make a fine Corporate manager as you fail to see the big picture and what's around you. Yes, we do have our stronger sales on weekends, however some of the outfitters work full time employment elsewhere and may not be "available" all weekend or may have family that they wish to spend time with since they may work 40 hrs at their "primary" employment. I don't have a problem having open availability on one (1) weekend day but they do not need every Outfitter to have "open" availability on both Saturday and Sunday - this appears to be another short sighted management decision to try and save money by eliminating employees (especially full time that receive benefits) or another way to weed out those who have been there for many years and receive higher pay and discounts. FYI - once they gut more "Outfitters" they will consolidate more departments then start cutting managers next
Could this all be due to the problems they have hiring new blood? So the existing employees are getting squeezed to pick up the slack?
Nope, just a common sense regular outfitter.
Hmm sounds like a member of managment has chimed in
Duh!!! Retail stores do most of their business on the weekend. How stupid of Cabelas for ever allowing PT employees to not be available on one of the weekend days under the old policy. A lot of people hired on with open availability and then changed it shortly after once they realize the policy allowed one weekend day off. It's about damn time this got fixed.
Is this paperwork legal?? After all the good employees are gone who will they get to work in their stores? Like the previous statement reads, some people have reasons for working certain times. Are the managers going to give up their weekends off? Don't think so.
I worked in retail before and the way Cabela's treats their employees is not the norm!
If the paperwork is not signed or agreed upon, then it is stated that " one is self terminating" and will be left go. Self termination would fall under quitting ........ vacation would not have to be paid out under those terms. Look up the term constructive discharge, quitting ones job because one was forced to do so. There are reasons people have limited availability or partial availabilty ....second jobs, being primary caregivers, family business that requires their time......
Yes, open availability on weekends. Since this is retail, that shouldn't be a surprise. Most retail establishments require it.
Is this all stores or just the Hamburg Store??
It is a shame that it comes down to this. Hamburg hourly employees have lost all respect for those in charge. And those in charge don't seem to care. Why are they making everyone miserable? Unhappy employees are NOT going to do a good job no matter how much they are THREATENED. It seem to me that Johns, Peel and McGowen are just a bunch of bullies.
We got the same speech today but they are getting a lot of push back. We are staffed so short now that I am sure we will be getting scheduled for Sat and Sun for the foreseeable future. I am about done.
So sad and wrong on so many levels. When the business and corporation atitude demands and expects one to forfeit and sacrifice thier whole exsistence to the benefif of the 'company'. Where have we gone wrong? People are not property!
Not sure this is anything new - the PT's in our store have had to be available 20 hours per week and open availability at least one weekend day for some time
I've worked for a few companies that require open availability.
Ah, the Cabela's way. They treat their store employees like they are property.
How can they legally do that? Can you consult a attorney or research employment laws? So if you want a life you have to quit or your life will be your employer. Family must not be important
