3D NAND: Gum stick-sized SSDs with more than 3.5 terabytes (TB) of storage!!!! https://www.micron.com/about/news-and-events/media-relations/m

How can hard drives compete w/SSD, except for data back-up? The SanDisk/Toshiba joint venture is building factory to produce 3D NAND.

These are all concept technologies, just like the hamr, feasible on theory, but tooks forever to get into consumers hand

Don't forget that Seagate & Micron are working together. Seagate has the Firmware IP that these SSD companies need and the manufacturing know-how.

I worked for a HDD company and I know HAMR is going nowhere.

HDD industry has something called HAMR (heat assisted magnetic recording). It is supposed to be able to deliver 2x-10x storage density compared to current HDD products. Seagate claims the product will be available in 2 years. But I know some engineers working on HAMR. It is not easy due to the fact that it uses very high temperature (near the temperature on Venus) to assist data storage and therefore it has product reliability concern. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

i hope the HDD industry comes up with some e-mazing new technology 4D magnetic recording that outplays the SSD. I will try to think of something to try and keep this HDD industry intact.
