Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Working in the Silicon Valley as an engineer use to be the ultimate career.

Today, the Valley has been overrun by H1Bs from India and Pakistan that refuse to work with other ethnic groups. Additionally, Indian management has taken over the best companies in the valley that now just want to hire H1Bs from India. The H1Bs that came to the valley from India 15-20 years ago were really sharp. Yet, today, the H1Bs coming from India are subpar to the American standard and are mostly a burden to the workplace. Today, High Tech wages are suppressed, Real Estate and Rents continue to rise, and the highest skilled tech workers in the valley have now been deemed too expensive and therefore obsolete. Everything that made the Valley wonderful and worthwhile is now gone. We've given the best jobs in the world to the H1B, allowed the H1B to reside in the best geographic location in the world, and now the highest skilled workers in the world have been disparaged and displaced by the H1B over cost rather than skill. American High Tech workers are not being put first. In fact, they are being put last. American High Tech workers are being treated as third class illiterate felons while the H1B is being treated as a first class citizen that does not hold citizenship. If you are an American Citizen and have been displaced by an H1B - then it is time to write to your congressmen and ask for the denial of any further work visas to the country.

i agree with 1pja. The quality of Indian students 15-20 years back was just much much better... It has truly gone down because of the H-1B flodd gate opening. Now coming to America for a H-1B job is like a joke.

To all Americans whining about H1B's...Why don't you move back to the redneck states? You'll see plenty of white faces, and you can all eat hamburgers, drink beer and have sex with your cousins.

Just because you can't compete. Any ways of you care so much buy made in USA next time. And with bitching if you by your own acceptance can be replaced by an engineer from third world who didn't have the same high quality of education that you had all through your life speaks volumes about your ability. No disrespect to anyone who got axed.

I'm an Indian who came here to do my MS and stayed back on a H1B 18 yrs back.

Back then, on my first day, my new mgr gifted me a 300 page doc and said need a test plan for this in 4-5 weeks, good luck! And I did it.

Now, millennials, especially Indians, especially Indian-ladies, think that they have done some great thing by getting their "MASTERS" and want to sit around doing nothing more than any high school intern can do.

So, being an Indian, I agree with the post. But guys, please keep it clean and don't abuse every Indian around.

In theory! In practice however that is not the reason corporations hire H1Bs. Americans cost more and hiring an American in high tech helps strengthening the middle class. They much rather import tech slaves and push Americans into the poor class, much easier to control and rule over them. Why bother with few here when billions of slaves are out there, ready for your exploitation, those few remaining in middle class must be crushed and pushed into poverty, so they won't dare using what's left of their democracy to challenge the ruling class.

What you don't get is that, in theory, each h1b is hired only because no equivalent US citizen can be found. By making it harder to hire these workers, we either reduce US companies' competitiveness by forcing them to hire sub par American worker, or force the companies to hire workers overseas. The h1b program is the greatest coup of the American government. The US has only 300 million people compared to 1.x billions each in India and China. The only reason the US has remained the leader technologically is because we attract the best from around the world. We incorporate them into our society and have them continue to make America the #1 country in the world. If the US were to completely close its borders, Russia, China, and India would be ecstatic. They'd be able to keep their best talent and pretty soon India and China would overtake US as the most advanced countries in the world.

There are so many ways to correct the system. Just a few examples, lower H1B numbers and increase the fees for applying by a meaningful amount. Put a quota on countries like India and China, much like green card process, there are too many of them and they have figured out how to abuse the system. For every H1B hired, companies must pay for training or education of a citizen for the same job, increasing their cost of replacing citizens and then pocketing the difference.

At Intel, hiring preference goes to US citizens. It's the law and from the manager's perspective, they're cheaper and easier to hire because we don't have to fill out immigration papers and hire lawyers for to process the papers. There are many many Indian students in the US. Some are very good while many are not. The same is true for American students. I can't hire an American just because he/she is an American. If you got an engineering degree with 3.0 gpa, it's just not good enough. I can't hire an American 3.0 over a foreign student 3.9 because talent and skill matters in the tech industry. For those of you saying all jobs should go to American first before going to h1b, you're delusional. How about working harder to get better grades? I guarantee you all American STEM students with 3.7 gpa or higher are highly sought after and have no trouble finding jobs.

As for managers that abuse the h1b program and hire people based on race instead of skill, perhaps that does happen. If so, let's address that problem instead of blaming all Indians or h1b program. The reality is many Indians and Chinese study in STEM, so even without any h1b abuse, there will be many of them that are very good and deserving to be hired by Intel so Intel can remain competitive globally.

If you are an American citizen and you are good at whatever work you do, you should able to find another job in no time..stop complaining about H1B, first try to evaluate your skills and prepare your weak areas accordingly..

It should not be a matter to you either Indian H1B's are under skilled or subpar standard, everyone is working to make their living

Absolutely agree.. H1B quality from India has fallen substantially from the early 90s.. It used be about the best and brightest. Only engineers from top schools like the IIT could even dream of coming to the US. Coming to the US was meant to be a mark of achievement. Well, we know what happened after the flood gates opened. Anyone can come even if they are subpar.. Coming to US is a joke now.. Well, the STEM crisis myth was responsible for this and used to flood the market. We are now seeing the effects.

Ok, here's a brain teaser for the board:

An African AMERICAN male (born in the US to US citizens) and an Hispanic AMERICAN female (also born in the US to US citizens) have a child that is born in the US on US soil.

Is that child -

A) an IMMIGRANT (as many have said)

B) a NON-IMMIGRANT American Citizen

C) a TRANS-IMMIGRANT (for Liberals that want to make up new words)

D) A future Iranian scientist

E) A Jainist from India, destined to be the next Ghandi

F) A Tatooed Japanese / Filipino cellist with a Latvian accent

It just can't be more obvious, but I'm sure alot of mentally suppressed answers will come in. Have fun!

I had a window office at this company I worked at a while back

A new hire from India joined. When I showed up for work one day, I found my entire cubicle moved to accommodate for the new Indian employee so she can have an office with a view. My boss was Indian so he naturally wants to give the best office to an Indian

The other Indian dude also was given a rare window office. They were the only two Indian engineers in the whole company but both received special treatment because the VP was Indian.

She turned out to be not very productive, spending her time staring at the screen while waiting for the build to finish.

She was later terminated for poor performance.

Why all the talk about "native americans'?

I believe people complaining about immigrants are saying that "American Citizens" should be given these jobs before H1Bs, and illegal immigrants.

As far as I know there are 300 million US citizens give or take which include Indians, aborigines, Whites, blacks, asians....

Sounds like the semantics police have nothing to do today.

This is so patently irresponsible and false. Of COURSE where you were born makes you native to that country. What the Liberal Left is saying is that if you cross the border illegally and have a child in the US, that child, having been born here in the USA, is a NOT an immigrant, but born native on American soil.

So cut the crap... you cannot have this argument both ways. Stop twisting the definition of words to support your ignorant slimy liberal agenda.

All Americans ARE NOT immigrants. Most of us were born here. Just because my great great great great great great grand-daddy was an immigrant doesn't make me one.

It does nothing to compare immigrants from 400, 300, 300, 100, or even 50yrs ago to today. Population, geopolitical and cultural issues have changed.

I dislike all this racism. Anyone has a right to any job. If a person was born in America or immigrated to America, it shouldn't make a difference.

It was (is?) common to hear Irish whinging that the Polish were stealing their jobs. Ultimately most Polish were very hard workers who took the jobs the Irish thought they were too good for. Any time there is an influx of foreigners to a country, racism comes to the surface.

Have controls in place, fine. But ultimately you aren't better than anyone else just because of the patch of soil you were born on. Isn't the quality of education supposed to be pretty poor in the USA outside of the Ivy Leagues when compared to many other countries? I can see why companies might want to hire from outside the USA, if they are getting people with a better education.

When i worked at Qualcomm on temporary assignment, my two direct bosses were Indians (one of whom never seem to show up for work cos we couldn't locate him).

My bosses' boss was Indian. And my bosses' bosses' boss was also Indian; so that's 3 layers up.

98% of my colleagues were Indians.

You ask why was a fully qualified and experienced American citizen like myself working on temporary contract? Its because, like the article said, Indians only want to hire Indians.

i had to train and teach some of my colleagues even though they were there before me.

When they decided to cut back, i was one of the first few to go while the Indians still have a job and benefits.

• Silicon Valley has cultural ties around the

world. With 36 percent of its population

born in another country, the San José area

tops every other U.S. metro area, besides

Miami, in its percentage of foreign-born

residents

• Net foreign in-migration has long been a

substantial source of new population and

in 2007 increased by 11 percent.

• The region’s residents are more than twice as

likely as U.S. residents to speak a language

other than English.

• Among those who speak a language other

than English at home, the largest proportion

speak an Asian or Pacific Islander language

(49 percent), just ahead of the share of

Spanish speakers (40 percent).

• Immigrants with no English skills earned an

average hourly wage of just $7.41 compared

to $31.44 for those with excellent English

skills.

• In 2000, the region was home to 177,233

undocumented newcomers, approximately

17 percent of whom were less than 17 years

of age.

• In comparison to U.S.-born residents,

immigrants have far greater needs in the

areas of health care, housing, employment,

child care and transportation.

Labor

Silicon Valley’s highly skilled immigrant workers.

The region’s high tech economy relies

increasingly on immigrant talent. In 2000, 49

percent of the region’s workers in science and

engineering jobs were born abroad, and by 2005,

it expanded to 55 percent. Immigrants founded

approximately 25 percent of Silicon Valley’s

high-tech firms.

Research indicates that many skilled immigrants

cannot use their previous training, education or

work experience to secure employment in their

field in the United States. These workers may be

unfamiliar with American job search techniques

and need assistance in updating skills or gaining

U.S. licensure or credentials in their occupations.

In addition, employers and regulatory bodies

often lack expertise in comparing education and

skill certifications obtained outside the United

States, leaving many skilled immigrants working

in jobs that require lower skills than they possess.

Silicon Valley’s low-skilled immigrant workers

While one in eight U.S. residents is an immigrant,

one in five low-wage workers is an immigrant.

In Silicon Valley, many immigrant workers not in

the high-tech industry contribute substantially to

the economy through low-wage production work.

It is estimated that immigrant women from

developing countries represent 68-90 percent of

the operative labor force in this region. Immigrant

women earn substantially less than immigrant

men. Undocumented workers, due to their lack of

work authorization, have limited options for

moving out of low-wage jobs.

All these guys support a particularly crooked political party and political correctness keeps their jobs. None of them can be fired. because of PC.
