Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

What a lofty load of crap to appease investors and feign relevance.

This glimpse into the future of toys may make you wish you hadn’t been born … yet, anyway.

Eighty-six-year-old toymaker Fisher-Price partnered with design consultancy Continuum for this concept video that envisions what child’s play will be like in 2025.

Funny as studies show all of the ocular overstimulation and interactive devices have been stunting childhood development. Always a day late and a dollar short. Way to go…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BPidRZ_F5Y

In that not-too-distant future, interactivity will be key, as plastic gives way to holograms — on the wall, on the ceiling, on windows and in the air — and felt pieces lay the groundwork for the appearance of three-dimensional toys from a Star Trek-like replicator.

Fisher-Price’s Mark Zeller offers insights into what the future holds at Co.Create, but if it even comes close to that video, the next generation is going to haunted by an unbelievable number of stories that begin with, “Well, when I was a kid …”

I think she's only there to asses the furniture and equipment to be sold off in the fire sale once the campus is closed down. It's not like she's there to drive success.

"How does someone who is so unapproachable, elitist, condescending with NO sense of humor get into the toy business anyway?"

Ask the woman currently in charge of FP, I'd bet she could give you an answer.

I have to put on a "straight" face (no pun intended) in case he asks about this site. Have to avoid busting out laughing in his face or I'll be on the unemployment line. It's too funny but soooooooo true.

How does someone who is so unapproachable, elitist, condescending with NO sense of humor get into the toy business anyway? Does he really have such skewed sense of self That makes Him see himself otherwise?? It's such a Head scratcher - watching him make presentations at outside events (pre- packaged ppts done by everyone that works for him) is like watching someone read the phone book. Do you really believe he understands play? What makes something fun? Aw c'mon really! Who wants to go on a playdate with this guy? Booooooo-ring! There is nothing about him to make anyone believe he is TOY design leader. Snoozefest.

it's amazing that someone who has openly admitted that we make cost reduced crap over the years is heading up design and still churning out the same crap. yes, his involvement in meetings is pitiful. so dissociative it's pathetic.

Next video will be the "car" design that silver fox MINDLESSLY scribbles on his notebook during any given meeting. For anyone that has sat close to him knows exactly what I'm referring to. I'm sure that will appear in the next installation. He can finally make that design work for him. I'm sure it will be a flying car too - right next to the pigs.

Smh.

I guess virtual toys won't need PI, copyrighting, PLM and all the other fun stuffs. This is all assuming Donald Trump hasn't started WWIII

this has been the ethos at FP for years now, from predicting that every product will be in a plain white mailer box to virtual toys. they are reaching for stars instead of having their feet firmly planted on the ground making quality products in the here and now. too busy diluting brands with multiple sub-segments looking to see what sh-- will stick to the walls. if the want to get into the tech business then why not partner with Mattel and bring back the power glove? they already tried the VR viewmaster. how's that going?

I saw this expensive "sizzle" and as an insider I wonder what it says? FP will be a software and UI company in the future?

To an outsider it seems to say that the future is all holograms and digital experiences and human contact and physical interactions are old hat.

Sure it may fool the riff raff as all shiny things will. At the end of the day I as a parent myself didn't feel like rushing out to buy an FP product after watching that video. Which is essentially any junior Industrial Design student's concept executed by an expensive PR company. All powered by magic and behaviors that don't make the slightest sense. Bravo. Great way to spend the company money.

Keep praising the toy and the silver haired tool as your jobs get outsourced. Fools. EA is headed towards the scrap heap. Get your applications in for stock boy at vidlers, east aurora is headed for the sh--ter.

The effectiveness of learning with the codeapillar or Beatbo the toy created by a millennial who is fascinated with a dance music drug culture…it's laughable. Parents don't care!! Mom talks are BS! We all know time and again who the ringer is in the room, who's the ignored mom that just wants to talk and who's the nanny sent by the mom. They are about as effective as the big headed bear and his friends were saleable.

Who cares what you earn, what these products contributed to the bottom line? We all know when the next Quarterly report comes out the proverbial sh-- will hit the fan and all the inflating of sales were to appease shareholders and pay a dividend. Back in the day, we had layoffs after a bad year. It was expected, understood and though you hated to see some people go you understood it was a necessity and accepted it with gratitude that you still had some value.

Nowadays, you bust your assand wonder if I went the extra mile to curry favor with my director, if I'm fashionable enough to fit the mattel WC motif? I'm in Buffalo and I have to dress like a superficial twat from LA just to look hipster enough to keep my job? Morale sucks assmore than the folks in upper management after hours, and let's be honest: Our stock is doing great, yet we're still having rolling layoffs? Explain the logic in that.

All the hate towards Fisher-Price on this site (Beatbo, future of parenting, Codeapillar, the workers there). At least Fisher-Price is trying new things. It is too bad this site has just become about hating everything and everyone rather than focusing on the legitimate problems and concerns out there. Even then, this is a public forum... shouldn't be requesting or giving Beatbo numbers or salary info or other confidential information for Mattel.

What was the bottom line contribution to the company by BeatBo?

We know the bottom line contribution from the video is negative.

Of all the horrendous things going on at this company, how can you start hating on BeatBo??? Check your facts before you start spewing your poisonous Matthell bile all over one of the few bright spots. Fact: BeatBo won the TOTY. Fact: BeatBo easily ranks among the top 3 FP drivers of all time. The evidence against BeatBo is nonexistent, at best. Why don't you aim your criticism at the real problems with this company, like the dehumanizing and inept talent management practices, or the extreme shortsightedness in our upper mismanagement decision making, or the arrogant cronyism gushing from El Segundo? We all could and have gone on and on about these problems. Say what you will about the FP video, but the last thing on the list of problems is BeatBo.

I have been involved with many TOTY Award winners that didn't make any money. Winning the award doesn't translate to sales or profit.

Back to the topic of this thread. I'm sure it took more than six figures to produce the video in question. It doesn't seem to be selling any FP product. So what is the ROI for this expenditure?

PREACH!

BTW, TOTYS is totally a vanity award. it's grammy's of the toy industry. voted on by and given to peers.

This video is a pure vanity project that cost too much and delivers nothing. Without a doubt the execs who spearheaded this will be adding Producer to their titles and resumes. Not one FP product will be sold due to this being made. It is an example of people using company funds to try and further their careers. How many people who have been laid off could have kept their jobs for the price of this video?

Seriously, you misinformed poser...what do you call BeatBo? Go climb back into that pathetic cess pool you crawled out off!

Conceptualization, creativity and collaboration is alive and well at FP. It is perhaps the one division under Mathell that still gets it.

Also, if you had a clue you'd know that those involved and the DNA at FP remains humble and unpretentious.

By the way the bitterness you exude...pathetic!

Yeah this is pretentious bullshit at it's best.

This video is the combined effort of an out of touch company that has to "partner" with outside companies because they can't conceptualize internally and a silver fox who is trying to justify why he hasn't outlived his usefulness even though he hasn't produced a mega hit since he moved upstate. Pathetic.

Get over yourself cowboy! I give FP a lot of credit for thinking beyond our next quarters dividend payout. Future think is just that, right, wrong, or indifferent...it lets our audience now that we care and are giving thought to what might be. Its intentions are genuine and have nothing to do with faking relevance. It's product development at its finest and purest state.

My hats off to Mark and all involved in bringing this "show car" out at a time when it is needed most!
