Quit or wait it out?

Has anybody quit and still received unemployment benefits? If so, what proof did you need to reasonable circumstances?

I have never understood people who quit a job before they have something else. When you get laid off you will at least get a couple of weeks of severance. When you quit you get nothing. Sure, service company severance is not near a good as operators, but one day of severance is better than nothing.

It is also ALWAYS easier to get a job when you have a job. When you are unemployed you have no leverage to negotiate. If I am looking at someones resume it will raise a red flag if they quit their last job. My first thought will be that they quit because they were about to be fired anyway. If they were laid off I will just assume they were caught up in the cut backs along with the thousand other oil field workers let go.

On that same note, when you quit you burn a bridge. Don't plan to use your previous manager as a reference. Plus, no matter what you think, it is a small industry. Chance are you will encounter the same people over and over again over the course of your career.

As you point out in your question, if you quit your job you do not automatically receive unemployment benefits. The easiest route is to show that they cut your wage 20% or more over the last year, but this is based on your BASE pay. If you make overtime, or got a bonus, and your total income was still more than your base minus 20% you will most likely not qualify for unemployment.

Even if you do qualify for unemployment, it is probably a lot less than you think. In the state of Texas your MAX benefits is $465 per week for 26 weeks. That is $2,015 per month. The equivalent of $11.63 per hr over a 40 hour work week. The benefits last for a MAX of 6 months or a grand total of $12,090.

Don't forget that when you quit you also loose your health insurance. Have you looked at the Obama Care plans? They are not cheap. Can you pay for insurance and living expenses out of your $2,015 per month, while trying to find another job?

Put up with the job and start actively looking for something else. As the old saying goes "A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush".

I know that not everyone is in the USA, but I imagine the numbers would be similar, or worse, in many international locations.

you can volunteer to be laid off. Whether they do or not it's up to them. If you leave at your own accord, you quit, not laid off hence no compensation
