Back around 2000 or so a bunch of us "engineering associate's"s, tech5's, etc. were finally promoted to engineer titles. It was when the stock price was very low, layoffs common, and we were struggling. So if you see it happening SPEAK UP and demand the promotion.
Or just get the heck out and do something new - the problem is that there is no "new" thing like there has been in the past. The hardware electronics industry has become stagnant.
"I have heard some being asked how many employees do they need to be able to function." Yes, my bosses boss told me directly in April 2015 that's what he had to decide. They decided they could give my work to other people and still get by, so they laid me off.
WD has also been promoting people during layoff!
March 11, 2016 - do not know how many, I was one of ?
Avago had done a very strange thing for the recent Broadcom layoff. It promoted and raised the salary for 2 of my friends work in Broadcom while laying off others. WD didn't do that in previous layoffs.
I have heard some being asked how many employees do they need to be able to function. The manager is in high risk of being removed or replaced by HGST or WD employee
Does your direct report manager make the suggestion or decision? If not, how does higher level manager has the knowledge to decide which ones to stay or to leave is best for the company?
My limited experience w/WD VP's during layoffs (e.g. mine) is that they're not especially organized, and not all of their decisions are thought out very well. In some departments, it's chaos among the leaders trying to decide who to lay off. Maybe other departments are better.
Absolutely no communication regarding the future dates. Why is the management keeping it a secret?
You are quite wrong, this is not how WD and HGST operate, there will be not one large layoff but continuously from now till the sandisk merger and further ones after that
VPs manage to sidestep this question that is burning in everyone's minds and don't address this, nor will they share the percentage of reduction to be expected. I personally find this to be an insensitive approach - I suspect it is April only.
Anyone knows when are the actual layoffs happening?
