Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

Restructured out of a job.

In the restructuring process my store was reassigned as a "standard" tier store, even though we had sales over 6,000,000 last year. Apparently, according to corporate we are trending negatively even though we are positive comp for the year thus far, odd that. I was the Operations Manager. Oops, not anymore. The stress of the job, and the frantic, unorganized direction of the company leaves me feeling somewhat relieved and grateful for a way out. It's a sad thing to see what's happening to this company and to the many excellent people at the retail level.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your job, but it is likely a relief for you.

The restructuring and elimination of more OM positions is actually good new for many, as it shows evidence of a trend by Staples to fire OM's before the position is eliminated to avoid having to pay severance.

They are basically trying to eliminate the Ops Manager position entirely.

Why pay someone $50k as an OM when they can get someone to take the Ops Sup position for <$30k and demand the same accountability from them? I know a few Ops Sups that are basically running their stores because the GMs and SMs are brand new to the company, hired after the previous ones were PIPed out.

If you were actually laid off and will receive severance, consider yourself fortunate. Many Ops managers were put on PIPs for not meeting unrealistic goals and then fired.

At least they gave you a life preserver rather than just throwing you off the sinking ship. It is probably the best outcome for you because all the actual lifeboats will be used by the execs.
