Thread regarding NetApp (formerly Network Appliance Inc.) layoffs

Hardware

Confirmed with a VP in engineering that hardware group will take a hit.

There is a big push now within NetApp is leveraging whitebox / ODM solutions.

Just look at Solidfire -- someone else's hardware!

Started packing my things right after the All Hands last week with the "Transformation" update rambling about ODM and White Box. When Foxconn has to try to make ONCRACK behave on their commodity boxes without our help they'll have to put nets up at the engineering sites like they did at the factories.

I knew Pittsburgh hardware was boned after Ben Speiser left. I'm impressed it took them this long to burn us.

Going to run HW like KS group, quality will be taking a hit. A $1b program can't be run like a $10m program. I'm sure the engineering worker bees will take the fall when this all ends in tears.

At least 6 or 7 hardware people in Pittsburgh got axed, including the guy who was the manager of HW since the Spinnaker days. Mostly entry level but one guy who had been here several years got let go too.
