Thread regarding CenturyLink layoffs

Poisonous atmosphere

The turnover rate at CenturyLink is extremely high. Most of the turnover is due to the old phone company mentality - the company is frozen in 1990.

The sales team has to be chasing pennies under every rock. The pay plan is weak and they try to paint a great picture but it is really a lot of smoke and some mirrors.

I will give Kathy (recruiter for centurylink) her just props. She has a never ending job of trying to put butts in the seats. She is very thorough in the explanation of the job functions, so, if you meet with her listen carefully. She does a very good job of laying out what is expected and how those expectations are to be met.

However, you are still asked to beat puppies in the head with a bat - by that, I mean you still have to ambush the customers when they call in. All in all - it is just an old phone company trying to keep pace with a tired sales model.

It's hard to generalize when it comes to CenturyLink as we have multiple subsidiaries and they are all different and many are fairly large. When it comes to my group, it really depends on how you are aligned as some teams have very low attrition, while others have crazy levels of attrition.

Whatever measure you take, it reflects bad on a manager if he or she loses a resource - I am a manager and I absolutely hate when people leave.

This mentality that CTL is a tired old phone company pisses me off. Yes, contrary to popular belief from the senior management in Monroe, WE ARE THE PHONE COMPANY! To all of those senior citizens who still have their landline and pay their $40 per month WE ARE THE PHONE COMPANY. This crap where it takes 5 (or more) days to repair a residential phone line is ludicrous. We used to repair a phone line within 24-36 hours, but they've cut so many jobs, it can't be done. Prism is taking all the money and not delivering. We are missing out on THOUSANDS of potential DSL customers who live right in the middle of large metropolitan cities and they can't even get DSL service - or if they can, it's nothing better than 1.5M. CTL management lives in the past. They think that large cities like Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Denver, Minneapolis etc can be handled like the very small towns where CenturyTel started. WRONG!

So many employees with many many years of service are leaving in droves because they are tired of getting screwed by senior management. Raise my healthcare, cut my benefits, cut my bonus potential, cut the severance package and wonder why all the knowledge is migrating out the door. How I wish Joe Nacchio would come back to save us!
