Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

I didn't know the postal union was still fighting this or had gotten this far....

I knew there was supposed to be a hearing back in August of '15, but never heard anything after.

As much as the NLRB case is about postal union members losing hours and their jobs being threatened Staples employees are being exploited.

My main issue with this whole program is that local post offices that had a participating Staples in the town actually reduced their retail window hours and directed people to go to Staples instead.

Staples does not have dedicated coverage for their in store shipping outlet. Staples expects associates to handle shipping in addition to their regular duties.

Little to no additional payroll was provided to stores to cover this service. Instead, stores were told the additional foot traffic would increases revenues, thereby generating payroll hours. As an Operations Manager (now former) this made my job hell. When there even was an office supply associate scheduled at all, they spent very little time working in OS. They were either called for back up register or to assist CPC with shipping. During peak holiday periods either the OS associate or myself were stuck at the ship-center for hours at a time, taking away productivity and customer service from the sales floor.

When I wrote the store schedules I attempted to take a few payroll hours from each department to allow for coverage to ship center and this worked well for about 2 weeks. The SM noticed I was taking hours away from tech and CPC and went crying to the DM. CPC was no help either. They could have no one in line and would instantly call for back up at shipping as soon as they saw someone come in with a package. The GM, who had originally supported me after seeing the benefits of scheduling someone for shipping, quickly withdrew their support after the SM went to the DM.

Long story short, I was placed on a PiP and terminated because I was unable to do my real job when either myself or my scheduled associates were tied up in shipping.

We had some idiot come in 20 minutes before closing that wanted to ship 20 packages to Hong Kong. He had been in earlier in the day buying boxes and tape and knew when we closed.

This guy had all the wrong addresses and districts (HKs version of a zip code) so the system kept coming up with invalid address for each package. The mail was not being picked up the next day anyway (holiday) so I suggested he come back the next day with verified addresses. He was also refusing to sign the customs forms. At this point it was 30 minutes past closing and he flipped out.

I really should have just told him we were closed and he had to leave because by that point he was going to call corporate no matter what. In the end he finally left 2 hours after coming in, and we still had to finish closing. In hindsight I should of just told him the computer was down.

SHIPPING, regardless of its purported benefits, is the single largest hindrance to the copy center. At our store, which only has one cpc associate working at a time, does not as a rule, help with shipping, it's all on the one copy center guy. We are supposed to stop working on a $ 10,000 a year customers job to enter a postal package. Like our or not, we are manufacturing and need time, space and told to make things. I have told my gm that I could guarantee 20% growth if there was no shipping. More if they had two associates on at once. We could, excel and solidly staples copy services as a leader, but not until corporate stops sabotaging it. They want an in-store copy and print center which actually doesn't do any copy and print, because that would get in the way of ask there stupid ideas. I bet there are many out there like me, a crafts man, a print professional. As such, can't you see the potential! And the massive lack of any true PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES. IT IS A TRAVESTY OF WASTED STEPS, RUSHED OUT COMES, INCONSISTENCIES. Oh boy I get mad. You can't tell me the e bay seller who brings in 15 individual packages to be entered through post office is worth the 20 minutes it takes.

Not Shocked. Staples constantly adds new "programs" or "initiatives" to increase sales. I have yet to see one GENERATE SALES. Just added tasks for the stores to do and more pressure put on everyone in the store. Someday they will wake up but it will be too late the Staples retail footprint is damaged due to poor service, high prices and lack of available tech items when the customer needs them. The party is over and the epitaph will be written in the next 3-5 years if not sooner, whether the merger goes through or not this company is screwed because of poor upper management.
