They actually DO replace older workers with younger cheeper workers or temps they just give them slightly different titles and give you a severance package to not sue the company

and it is much harder on those of us that get laid off then managers and directors that loose a few nights sleep

you see it's a persons lively- hood your taking away it's how you pay bills feed and protect your family it's survival !!!

I should know I was laid off last year and replace by a temp much younger.

Most people are worried both about the company and their own job stability - that is why they are here. What you don't understand is by being so irrational and extreme in your hate of the company and anything associated with it, you are actually making them (and me) feel compelled to defend the company to expose your extremism for what it is. If you truly have that much hate, why not take control of your life and look for something that will make you happy rather than spend your efforts ranting on this website about the company and your job? You have a choice. Yes there are jerks at Mattel, Anerican Girl, fisher-price, Mega but all companies have them. a lot of people are trying their best with what they have been dealt (and that includes some in management).

I overheard an EA manager with his report plotting to cut the other 2 people in their dept. They began actively looking for replacements at least 6 months before the layoff last year. It was a game to them - to say this doesn't happen is lie. After the layoff he would whine to anyone/everyone how he couldn't believe they were cut, how awful the higher ups were and how it was impossible to get any work done. It was quite the performance.

as it is obvious that you are just trying to get people riled up, either because you yourself got laid off despite your wondrous talents and numerous contributions or that you are about to because your wonderful attitude is so contagious. it is difficult to even fathom how to respond to your frothing rant whose whole purpose is to try to make the other person feel as miserable as yourself. but let's give it a go ok?

whether you have someone on your team that will get laid off there is no back room where these guys go to and draw straws to see who gets cut while they laugh and snicker. the human cost to these managers is a great strain as i'm sure it is no easy task on how to decide that, unless of course if they have someone as wonderful as yourself on their team which makes it a no brainer. regardless it is no greater strain than to the one that actually gets laid off. no excuses it sucks. and by the way no one gets promoted by the number of people that they lay off. so for you to assume that this manager does not agonize over this and feel affected by it is only evidence of your deep deep seated resentment in this work culture that blinds you to all logic or empathy. to which i can only feel sadness for you.

so not all managers are d*cks but sure some are. lay off the dude/ dudette lest you get more karmic comeuppance your way.

I have watched a director in NY bully a manager to write up her team members for the slightest infractions to build up a case for dismissal. I would see her periodically in the ladies room sobbing uncontrollably at the pressure this lowlife was putting on her. She's really sweet and caring person who treated people like family and I truly feel like this broke her spirit. No longer happy and uplifting. You can see the disgust on her face and know it's only a matter of time before she walks. Don't be so quick to judge. Some folks aren't cut throat but are face with a "them or you" choice. Seen it happen before. Person didn't make the right choice and was shown he door.

Don't be so hard on this manager. I was in a department a few years ago and the VP mandated each manager had to lay off an equal number of people, regardless of ability or workload. So sometimes it isn't the fault of your manager when you get whacked. It is possible they feel terrible about it and have no power to do the right thing.

So true. I can't give anyone on my team their papers because then the person who is getting laid off will know (thanks to this site). I have a team where EVERYONE is on edge and I feel like the worst human being alive because I was told I had to hold everything back in fear of this person going ballistic. When I was at hasbro they treated people with a bit more compassion.

No one knows anymore as the Unemployment Angel has now gone stealth. Totally undetectable/unpredictable in this new age here @ MattHell. Now you won't even hear the gunshot because it's a sniper from miles away that takes you out or it's using a silencer. He's gone rogue.

Back in the day it was different so we'll see next week.
