Homer City, Weston, Elkview were the same way so don't keep your hopes up. Operating costs dont mean anything just update your resumes.
Wonder if "Building 3" and the Kal-Ho are still open.
Worked out of that yard for a year, need to go back and see how the country has changed in the last 30 years. Ran across a couple of the people who had also worked there while I was overseas.
The cost of operating Kalkaska is very low, the equipment is paid for, the facility is paid for. The only real cost are materials and labor. If both are kept down then the camp shows profit with little work. When there isn't enough local work they send thier employees off to other facilities and charge hours against different cost centers. This camp has produced profit every year and gives us a presence of a wider geographical foot print at little cost. We've staged large crews out of thier even though it's less than ideal. I see no immediate benefit to closing Kalkaska.
I have wondered the same thing, I imagine a conversation in a Houston meeting room as something along the lines of: "Did you know we have a facility in Michigan?" "Really? Are there people there?" "Yea, even heavy equipment and full operations." "Huh, what da ya know?" Or so I always saw in my head.
