Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

FY 2016 Store Structure

Because people have been asking for clarification that may not have access to the information, I was clarify the new store structure for 2016:

New Tiers classifications:

Top: >6 Million / Year (148 Stores)

Standard: 2.75 Million - 6 Million / Year (1006 Stores)

Bottom: <2.75 Million / Year (149 Stores)

Retail Roles by Store Tier:

Top: General Manager, Operations Manager, Sales Manager, Team Supervisor

Standard: General Manager, Sales Manger, Operations Supervisor

Bottom: General Manager, Operations Manager

In addition to the above, Inventory Specialist, Tech Sales Supervisor, and Copy & Print Supervisor will still be found at all levels. It is implied that the Inventory Specialist and Tech Sales Supervisor may play a bigger role in the MOD process in Bottom Tier Stores then they have had to previously.

Top tier stores (formally making up both tier 1 and 2) will fundamentally be staying the same with manager roles. Stores formally consisting of tier 1, however, WILL be getting the same amount of payroll that tier 2 stores have always been getting, therefore getting less payroll overall.

Standard tier stores will comprise of the former tier 3 stores. It will also include higher performing tier 4 stores. While former tier 3 stores will be essentially staying the same, the biggest change in this group will be that the former tier 4 stores will be getting additional payroll and, most notably, an additional supervisor.

Bottom tier stores will be very similar to how a tier 4 store is now. The notable difference will be that the Assistant Manger will become an Operations Manager. In this layout, the General Manager will have direct jurisdiction in Copy & Print, as well as Easy Tech.

That is a possibility. In my time at Staples however I have found that not many managers are comfortable in both roles. I have done both, fairly well, as have some others i have know. For the most part, SMs I have known had no clue about 90% of operational tasks. Simiraly most good operations managers I have dealt with had no desire to be the used car salesmen Staples wants in that position.

This does not make much sense.

  1. By taking away payroll from (formerly) Tier 1 stores you are also effectively reducing their sales.

The "do more with less" concept is a failure. You can't keep cutting store payroll and expect the

same level of service and productivity.

  1. The Tier 4 Operations Manager position is pointless. By actively trying to succeed and bring your "Bottom Tier" store up to "Standard Tier" you will be eliminating your own position in reward for doing a good job (unless there happens to be an open position in a "Top Tier" store nearby.)
