After a long tenure at Intuit, I was laid off. It was a bit scary, as change can sometimes be, but it was necessary for me to quickly adjust my mindset and get busy locating employment.
As I explored other career opportunities, I was able to fully understand the market value of the skills that I had acquired. Trust me, if you have spent any length of time working at Intuit, you will have opportunities to be an impactful employee elsewhere. While I did work some full-time jobs, I really decided that I wanted to work on a contract basis. So, I leveraged the skills that I acquired to start a consulting business that allows me to work a very flexible schedule and earn a competitive wage doing what I enjoy.
As we all know, economy factors can and often do impact the bottom line of a business. This impact, sometimes results in layoffs. In any employment situation, be strategic, explore options and set goals that can be attained separate and apart from your primary place of employment. Although you work full time, obtain an advbanced degree or a certification of some kind. Attend conferences and workshops to keep your skills sharp. Apply for other jobs and go on interviews. That is a great way to keep abreast of the current needs of the marketplace and it allows you the opportunity to access your skills. Prepare yourself. It really is your responsibilty.
If a layoff occurs, you will have alternate plans in place! Hope this helps!
