Thread regarding NetApp (formerly Network Appliance Inc.) layoffs

Wake up, this is a Novell moment

I left a few months back and now use Amazon aws on a daily basis. There is no comparison to an on premise solution. For 80% of the workloads, Amazon beats anything on prem in terms of delivery time and if you are careful cost.

This is one of those Novell moments when it is time to learn a new skill set.

Back when Novell collapsed, smart people adapted by learning things like Microsoft services, Linux, and OpenLDAP.

NetApp skills are only valuable inside the NetApp universe. Go a little outside that, and they're totally worthless. If you are not onsite IT in one of these big NetApp accounts, then there is not much value in learning NetApp's antiquated way of doing things.

Start learning AWS as soon as possible. From there, you can go anywhere you want in the IT world.

You nailed it. It's for this reason that NetApp is frantically trying to make itself relevant to AWS users with its hybrid cloud products.

While it seems a decent move, unfortunately the rest of the company is not on board with that strategy. I predict it will fizzle.
