Thread regarding Avaya layoffs

Layoffs 2016?

A lot of US workers were laid off this week. Anyone have any numbers or more information? Have any other locations been affected? Of course bad executive decisions seem to lead to "cost-saving measures"...i.e. Layoffs. When will companies learn that some talent is irreplaceable and start holding people to responsibilities, instead of the ones doing all of the hard work?

we need Trump to win to stop the massive layoff due to companies trying to cut cost moving labor to cheap countries.

India getting 100B in Outsourcing. How many good jobs could be created in America with this recurring annual spending of US companies

I think company is making good money, but most of revenue got s---ed by salary and Interest. because of this net profit lef behind is only 200M.

Company cant do anything with interest, They have to pay it. But they definately do something with salary. So they removing highly paid people Starting with US.. will come low cost centers as well.

Avayas workforce is near about 10k, if 10k people giving only 200M net profit why some one would AVAYA by investing min 6B. By keeping that 6B in bank they will get good returns.

If by luck someone is showed interest and seat for deal they could told that minimize the workforce. if i where buying i have asked for only 4.5k workforce with 8B.

Must read..

Business sale?

The evolution of the company has not come cheap, and alongside the revenue hit, it has accumulated about $US6 billion in debt.

Avaya's private equity owners, Silver Lake Partners and TPG Capital, are considering how to restructure the debt, and Mr Abou-Ltaif confirmed that a sale of the firm was a potential option.

"Some of the debt is due in 2017 and a company like ours with 330,000 customers and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of $US1 billion is attractive," he said.

"It could be a merger, someone could buy us, but we're looking to make sure we continue to service our customers well."

No morale. Though having the potential, no direction and clarity of thought on both short term and long term. goals with least focus on return on investment already made. Everything narrows down to cost cutting. Insecurity prevails. Managers/leaders pretend to work or showcase flavory work for survival with no clarity of thought. Message is clear. Look out. Market is good for talented people and there are options out there. Employee gets to learn and upskill great technology here and that is the only positive I see.

Avaya offered a separation package to all top level talent within Avaya. Lots of the best people took the package and were accepted. Lots of dead weight left in this round as well. This was followed by bonuses for the upper management in the millions followed by all US employees being forced to take 5 day furloughs on or before Aug 31 2016. All furloughs are mandatory for the exception of the union workers.

As a person with intimate knowledge of how Avaya operates, A typical PBX Sale with $650,000.00 worth of sales in equipment and licenses has an additional installation/integration charge of about $250,000. This size equipment has to be installed in about 2 to 4 weeks in order to make the installation and sale profitable. But because of the high overhead and the high head count that Avaya tacks on to all installations, all installation budgets are always in the red. The sales teams routinely quote equipment wrong and this takes the sales into further red ink because Avaya has to end up giving equipment and services away that they can never charge back to the customer.

Most products within Avaya have a handful of people who know it really well, and those people are routinely in a Stressed position because the end up supporting a large portion of the personnel in the field who have never seen or their silo positions do not allow them exposure to the equipment and or their union contract splits up installation duties on any one product into multiple bodies.

On average One Communication server uses: 2 union personnel to Rack, Stack and do the base provisioning, and it takes 2 days to complete those tasks on that one server. That same server will have 2 to 4 different software specialists assigned to the installation that do not have any idea how one piece of their silo interacts with other parts of the overall solution. Avaya wastes lots of money and personnel from the sale all the way to the final installation to a tune of about 65% of the total sale is usually overhead.

Avaya decided to Deep Six the Nortel(Blue) technology in favor of their Avaya(Red) systems. In marketing they tell the customers that the Nortel Line is not going away but All Sales personnel are told to only sell Avaya red and up sell all Nortel(Blue) customers to Avaya(Red) by performing forklift upgrades.

Technologically Speaking the Nortel(Blue) technology is 20+ years ahead of the Avaya(Red) technology.

On average all Nortel Tech is based on Bellcore standards, whereas Avaya(Red) is usually based on a hodgepodge of various technologies they have acquired and not developed for purpose but made to interact by using APIs, and or writing interfaces and drivers to be able to integrate them.

Whether Avaya is for sale or not, any current employee shouldn't feel safe. Just looked at what's happened over the last few years. I can't imagine anyone still left can possible think they are better off today than they were 2-3 years ago, better opportunities are out there
