Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

why software jobs are going to Indians ?

because they work hard for it. Just look at their schools. They get trained from middle school working 10-12 hours a day learning Math and English. They are surrounded by lot of software people. Eventually, they pick up and are good at it. Compare to our middle schools here where all girls worry about makeup and boys, while boys trying to act cool, ask the girls out. How can America win ?

All the pressure comes in high school and no wonder half the kids are on anti depressants.. America needs to raise standards and cut down their activities that are useless like soccer, Piano etc. Just focus on studies and then you can get the jobs. Identify the skill set early on but that is the biggest problem. Which kid is good at what ? It might take fun out of life but if we can find the answer, that's the silver bullet..

Sorry, that's the truth.

@1ofp: "...explain to me why kids need anti-depressants...."

The short answer is that most kids don't need antidepressants. If this subset of the Venn diagram takes antidepressants, it's usually because they have ripped them off from their parents' medicine cabinet for experimentation with their friends. They also relax you when you are tense after several all-nighters spent studying for exams.

The kids that actually take antidepressants that were prescribed for them often suffer from various anxiety-induced medical conditions that were probably caused by parents who do things like yell at them when they f*ck up at soccer practice, bitch because they got a couple of B+ grades instead of straight "A" grades, and have public meltdowns because their little snowflake was robbed of his rightful place as winner of the Scripps Spelling Bee, the Westinghouse Talent Search--or whatever parents think is earth-shattering these days.

@1ofp:

" America is great because immigrants come from all around "

I think you got it wrong. People from other countries mostly developing countries are yearning you come here because it is a great country better than where they are now. Immigrants come here because it is great, not the other way round. If immigrants can make a place great why not stay in your own freaking country and make that great??

America is based on righteous Principles. Giving all a chance to better themselves. Freedom in all forms and yet at the same time setting boundaries to prevent individually from encroaching into others rights.

You are crazy to think that it is immigrants that is bettering this country. Imagine if America was running in the same way as the corrupted governments in most of the developing countries, you think the "immigrants" would have any opportunities to do anything?

Parents in the US no longer encourage kids to become engineers. It is no longer a honest, rewarding and lucrative profession. Times change. You can too.

The American folks who crib about all the stuff are lazy.. They think everything is their birth right.. Work had guys and get paid... Freescale and Motorola (in good old days) was run by americans.... Its dead... NXP purchased Freescale (Acquired by non-American Company). Example of incompetance.... All the tech companies where foreigners in majority are doing good...

“Identify the skill set early on…”

In America one can reinvent oneself, one can rise above stereotypes and preconceptions. Being free does not include funneling and imprisoning children into lifelong tracks. A lot of immigrants come here for this very reason.

“It might take fun out of life…”

You might be willing to simply and easily yank the fun out of your life and your children’s lives, but most Americans feel differently.

These two show “all men are created equal” and “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

BTW fellow Americans, rote learning is underrated. Sometimes after learning something it’s more efficient to memorize it rather than derive it or look it up all the time.

Bravo. It's all about cost. When some other third world nation starts spitting out programmers, they will be replaced as well. GREED

The entire premise is incorrect. The quality of software has not improved with the influx of H1B's. It's all about personnel cost.

Not that the imports are bad programmers or bad people, they generally are good, but they are here because they cost less, not because they are better.

I played sports throughout my childhood and later in high school and college. They enhanced my life and taught me cooperation, perseverance, team building, leadership, and much much more. I have a MSEE degree and a successful career now running my own business. Don't you think it is a bit odd your mind immediately switches to money when you evaluate the benefit of kids playing soccer ? Do you realize most children and their parents realize they will never be professional athletes. Isn't there more to life than just achieving the highest scholastic aptitude ? Do you consider yourself to be a happy person ? I am not trying to put you down but rather just broaden your perspective.

Sports is one of the biggest problems this country has. Every parent thinks enrolling their kids in sports programs will somehow be a path to success. It rarely is. Sure they may end with some scholarship money but their entire life from 5 years old and on has revolved around sports. What else will they be able to do with that scholarship money? They aren't going into engineering. They never took the hard classes that would prepare them for an engineering curriculum. They were too busy going to practice everyday and hard classes would interfere with sports related activity.

I'd like to see us divorce sports programs from school. Let Pop Warner, Babe Ruth, etc... take over the role of sports and make our schools a place of higher learning.

Kids should be kids, not miniature adults. Are you really that broken you will not let you kid play the piano or soccer ? Sad. very sad.
