Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Offer from WiPower

The offer is solid and the work seems exciting. How does WiPower business look like these days? Is it a risky move? I have to relocate to San Diego if I decided to join. Thanks!

If you've got an offer for Wipower in SD, why don't you look for an offer in Silicon Valley? At least then, when WP turns into the little niche market player it is, and you need to look for another job you'll have something to chose from (if you're in SJ). When it happens and you're stuck in SD, you'll only be able to go on unemployment. THE MARKET is in Silicon Valley.

@FWK1Mxv-2mte. Thanks for the details. From all the nonsense and hate I have read on this board, I am going to stay away from Qualcomm altogether. It doesn't seem like a positive work environment at all.

It's simplistic tech surrounded by many competing variants with very little customer penetration. You would think after 5-6 years of development it would eventually see some meaningful volume, but it hasn't. You're better served working something more complex that could be a stepping stone to the next job beyond this one.

Um no. If you have an offer to work on WiPower, avoid.

If you are young, have no dependents, and either don't own real estate, or are willing to lease out your current residence, go for it if the job seems like a good career move. Cost of living is about 25% less than Silicon Valley, it's less crowded, housing is more affordable. And also, the beach--not that you will be able to spend much time there. If WiPower doesn't pan out, and if you also have a background in biochemistry, or bioinformatics, you can easily find a position in the biotech sector on Torrey Mesa. That industry is pretty much what Qualcomm used to be over a decade ago.

Think twice about moving to SD. The number of engineering jobs in SD is small for such a large city unless you are a mobile/server/web type guy. If you are an EE or do embedded work, well you have been warned. If you want to use QC as a backup, if you are ok working for a soleless company, go for it.
