You know there's lot of hype around google's compensation package, usually by people that didn't get one...But, here's the rub. If you're good enough to get into Google, chances are you're probably going to be able to find position anywhere that is above average.

zxd: from what I have seen and heard, the folks from that have turned down Google are either one of the following
(1) they are offered a role that is pretty much same as what they have been doing at Q, for the Q chipsets on nexus device
(2) they are offered low compensation and stock.. Same as what they would have now with low Q stock
(3) they are offered a test/tool support role
Unless you are truly a good SW engineer who passed Googs SW engineering interview with flying colors (not someone who has crammed the minimal usual questions asked in interview) chances are you won't be getting a good package/role even though you have made it through the interview.
And then there are some ex-Q who like to "boast" that they turned down Google when in reality they got rejected! Yup pathetic!
I know someone who turned down GOOG offer.
He was my ex-boss and left QCOM recently
What metric is being used? Did you being average or median for that metric?
When I chose Qualcomm 20+ years ago, my metric was whether or not I would spend my time trying to solve challenging problems with smart people who wanted to do the same.
captain obvious returns!
