I would not bother with most of this on the list - face the reality - for the majority of IBM folks that are laid off there are many opportunities out there. Sure, not with IBM, but there are man fine companies that are thriving and since most of us have valuable and in-demand skills, transitioning should not be hard.
Things change once you hit 50 or so, at that point companies increasingly grow reluctant to invest in you as you retirement age approaches and you'd have to compromise quite a bit was it relates to what kind of gigs you accept. That's the reality... You compensation may drop, your benefits and perks may not be as lucrative as before - but still, you will be able to find something if you willing to compromise and accept the reality of the market wages...
I retired in 2010 and this is mostly behind me, I still get calls and offers from folks to help on a part time basis or to do a project or two. So, do not despair, keep your chin up and keep pushing forward regardless of obstacles you face.
