Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Server is not going to save Qualcomm.

TL;DR: Google will have to rewrite most of its codebase if they choose ARM based servers. ARM isn't gonna happen anytime soon.

Google is not going to use ARM server chips for at least next 10 years, if they decide to use them at all. Google has an extensive suite of cloud based tools which they will have to rewrite if they choose ARM. They will also have a rewrite most of their codebase to work with ARM, which is not going to happen anytime soon.

Intel's chips are getting more power efficient and even if Qualcomm comes up with an extremely competitive chip, Intel only needs to slash the prices enough to de-incentivize moving to ARM.

It's easy to see that management will - once again - chicken out and the server CPU escapade will end in tears for Qualcomm, because ...

  1. Management is only serious about 1 type of product, and that is RF system design. When the chips are down they will skimp on all the other products the company makes, witness the snapdragon 810 fiasco, it shows a severe lack of willpower.

  2. Qualcomm got the 2nd-tier engineers when they tried to raid Intel, and they will not be able to design state-of-the-art chips with 2nd-rate engineers.

The only advantage Qualcomm has is that it's bad management is not as horrible at Intel's horrible management, Intel has a bunch of total clowns at the top right now and Qualcomm is probably looking at that and saying, "hey we're only level 7 clowns but Intel has level 12 clowns and so we should be able to beat them as our management team is much less clownish than Intel's!"

All Qualcomm will do is drive down Intel's price and profits, at a cost to Q in time, money and eventually head count.

It's like the infrastructure division, except the infrastructure divisions losses did drive acceptance of CDMA by reducing overall vender costs. There is no such silver cloud here.

Google's going to have to rewrite millions of lines of assembly code.

yes, QCOM will bankrupt INTC, just like Saudi bankrupts shale. All due to a rumored server deal.

I agree but this has less to do with selling chips, the strategy is to hurt Intel by forcing them to lower prices in their most profitable segment. The hope is they will not have any more money to toss away at wireless,
