Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

The majority of non corporate Staples associates (yes the majority) get behind the changes each year. They support Staples by picking up the slack from the cuts, go above and beyond and salary associates put in EXTRA time to absorb the cuts.

The sad truth is that this cannot continue. Burnout is the new norm and is unrecognized/not acknowledged. If feedback is offered up the chain it comes back that there is a lack of efficiency. Not thank you but you must be doing something wrong. Flip that....if the extra hours were not put in and metrics are not hit, who do you think Staples will blame? Good people, people that have picked up the slack for years, that deserve better are looking to leave Staples to find meaningful work where their effort will be recognized.

After 9 years I'm leaving. I've had enough of the hours, working 90 mins after closing. Picking up the slack for this new generation that calls off or no shows whenever they feel like it. Tired of the GM not hiring anyone to help. Going to buy a fishing pole.

While I agree there are some high paid GMs out there. many (like me) are managing 40 hrs a week and out on the floor, hands on , for another 20. My SM makes more than me due to OT. With payroll the way it is we are both working 55-60 just to maintain customer service standards and keep the store up. You really can not cut much more at the store level and still expect any service or standards.

I do agree that districts and regions should be combined, respectively and Staples could easily shed 1/3-1/2 the DMs and RVPs. Then there are the divisional SVPs - again to many positions (compared to other retailers).

Watching From Afar - right on point as usual. Hopefully the stock price has shifted the BoD's view that Ron is the elite superstar he proclaims he is. If they do not do something about him soon then the shareholders may do something about them come Spring.

You are so on target. Ron et. al. thought they had moved beyond all mere mortals about 2006. In short the expected to become one of the "beautiful people". You know like John Kerry or a former General invited to address the masses at a Staples global meeting who turned out to be a BIG Obama supporter. He/they were SO ENTRALLED with the thought of becoming ELITE they completely stopped paying attention to the business. Ron turned it over to Demos and stepped into the exalted CEO slot. Well the s*t! hit the fan shortly thereafter and NO ONE WITH A BRAIN was paying attention. The best part is when Obamacare started to kick ass on all retailers and Staples dared to complain and Obama publicly slapped down Ron. A rude awakening I'm sure that he had NOT entered the beautiful people club. The follow up was the FTC screwing up the merger heheh GOD are these folks dumb.

Agree rob should go but it's a business. If I run my own business I am always thinking I need every dollar out of the customer. How I present that is up to the me and in your cases the associate. Problem is stores are paid too much. A GM should be leveled down. A District manager should basically be he level of a GM. A RVP same as a DM. When u compare staples to Best Buy a store manager at Best Buy in all cases runs more dollars than a staples DM and in some cases more than an RVP. When you compare it against Walmart it's worse. So start cutting. Staples needs to be drastic.

There's no way he should be still in charge of the company. What other company has a CEO with over a period of 10+ years with negative growth, yet continues to keep him, and in fact increases his compensation?

So true.... The loyalty is expected by Staples but is not returned. 500 let go in 1 week. There were cuts the week before and last year after the annual culling.

Bottom line, Staples is a sinking ship. If you "get behind the changes" and pick up slack from the payroll cuts you are wasting your time.

They will just expect you to keep making sacrifices and adjusting, and then , finally, YOU will be one of the cuts. No amount of loyalty or extra effort to Staples will changes this, and loyalty is a one way street at Staples. They do not deserve yours because you are extremely expendable to them.
