Thread regarding Whole Foods Market Inc. layoffs

Ever wonder why we make new hires do the physical assessment tests but do NOT Drug test like many other jobs??

And remember those lil health screenings they have to increase your discount card % are a sham to cut costs on the health insurance end..

I think the lack of drug-testing is one of the few things that WFM is still doing right.

So, what if you weigh 100 lbs?

How is it that everyone is expected to lift 50 regardless of build?

At a small weight, should I be required to lift half of my body weight?

Yep, they might as well hang a sign that says "Welcome drug and alcohol abusers! We don't pretest and you can't get hired elsewhere so bring your dependency issues here." No wonder our top regional assholes are always being so defensive and abusive. They sure ACT like they're on something. BTW when one of those jerks accuses YOU of something they're doing, there's a word for that ... "gaslighting." They're trying to make YOU think you're the one who's crazy and it shifts the blame away from them.

Weed and pills of all kinds sold at my store by several TMs while on the clock. No one objects because we have no narcs or squealers

If you are doing hard drugs on your own time that does impact your work...your attitudes, your safety practices, your awareness. I don't care if someone wants to have a joint after work, that's their business. But you can explicitly create a policy that bans people from using serious illegal drugs like meth, coke and LSD. Drug testing is needed especially in the regional offices. At the store level I've dealt with several people working while baked and had to pick up their slack or correct their mistakes. NO retailer in America operates that way, except us. What we've ended up with is a bunch of drug addicts because they know we don't test. Our no-testing policy actually attracts them!

If we drug tested you'd have to say goodbye to half the people that currently work here. I like the idea of what I do on my own time being my deal. It's how I deal with insane guests ;)

The safety specialist has to be innovative to keep his job, so he made that look like a cost cutting measure in the long run. These folks are so blind even Steve Wonder can laugh at them! Same with safety shoes but we still get cry babies breaking their bones here and there. Remember how the vendor sign up became more complicated than rocket science? Part of the KPI dream team innovation😂

Sounds like a region specific thing- that shit wouldn't fly here in CA

They make all new hires here in florida region do a physical test-lift 50 lbs. Some stair master for a few minutes and flexibility i think.typical corporate-liberatarian crap here- mackey and them want to weed out people who might cost the insurance or workmans comp.too much money but dont want to interfere with ya weed smoking privileges(or coke)..interesting to note though in florida they were also doing unannounced credit screenings on potential employees without divulging this..wfm lost a class action lawsuit on these grounds and paid out a pittance to hundreds of people

Interesting, I've never heard about a physical assessment as a condition of hire. My store seems to hire a lot of lazy weaklings lately who refuse to lift anything over a couple lbs because of things like "carpal tunnel," real or imagined.

I imagine they don't drug test because it costs the employer upwards of $50 per test and they're cheap as hell.
