QC has high hiring standards as well. Just because you feel you're a damn fine engineer doesn't make it true. It's obvious that Google thinks you're not.
Google doesn't pay double and the increase in compensation is not enough to move to the bay area. The earlier days of Google where tons of stocks were given are no longer. Every company will fall when they reach a certain level. It's the nature of the business.
I tried twice for HW jobs, once per year. Got rejected twice. I am a damn fine engineer.

I know plenty. Both "affected" and those who left by choice.
Qualcomm pays almost half of what Google pays. Who in their right mind will choose Qualcomm over Google?
I know a guy who got laid off and got accepted. And another who escaped to google before layoff announcement
Same here. I do think there are people who got in but are a very small minority. Smart, but stupid enough to work for Q.
