Thread regarding Education Management Corporation layoffs

Could anyone explain why they shut down Westwood and Corinthian schools for doing half as much as EDMC did but EDMC was allowed to stay open?

they won't last the holidays... so many students that I taught are jumping ship. Word is out on the fraud that this school is involved in.

All high schools around the country are being informed of their malpractice... that avenue is going to dry up!

The Corinthian excuse is a horrible one. We can't prosecute the murderer - we had a murder to deal with yesterday! Although I agree with the comments posted. Close the damn schools and stop the fraud.

I think "Corinthian going down...EDMC" is right. The Feds were a little shocked and awed when they brought down Corinthian. It's a little like when you try to patch a small hole in the wall and the whole thing collapses from rot - and out pours the rats and the roaches. They're a little freaked out and overwhelmed with the blowback. They are the Feds, but even they have a relatively small staff and limited budget. Getting some hard cash from EDMC (while the company is still solvent) and being able to boast that they brought them in line was the easy out. Of course, whether EDMC can survive is still a big question.

I dont know guys, as much as i would like to see the school totally fail, I have a feeling they dogged a bullet. The 11 Billion lawsuit was the biggest chance we had of putting this horrible institution out of business. As much as I would like to say the word has gotten out, most students coming straight from high school are out of the lope about all the underhanded dealing The Art Institute and its ilk are doing. Who is going to warn the new crop of kids every year? The ones that got burned will just move on with their lives and more kids will be drinking the kool-aid. The Art Institute will start a media blitz and all will be forgotten. Rinse Repeat.

Who Is anon right. Westwood and Corinthian were slow burns. EDMC is mirroring the same kind of behavior meaning they will end up the same fate. My friend was a former AI student but left after less than a year. this was back in 09 or 10 but he went back to his old school because he heard about the judgement against them so he wanted to see "how bad its gotten" and the place is a freaking ghost town. So many empty offices, one person in the registration (for a whole school mind you) and floor with classes that were once full are just empty class rooms pretty much.

The students will totally get relief. The amount of victims and it being election year has more traction than ever. All for profit schools will be victims of their own greed.

EDMC will eventually fold but the students will continue to suffer. I don't see the debt relief that students want happening. It is sad and wrong but it seems the only way they would get debt relief would be to change bankruptcy laws rather than hold EDMC accountable. Also, a lot of students still drink the AI Kool Aid.

The word is that the DOE was surprised by the fallout from their actions regarding Corinthian, including finding themselves in meetings with bankers, trying to arrange places for the displaced students to attend (they resolved this by sending them to other schools on the fraud watch list bizzarre!), costs of loan forgiveness and administering same, political fallout, etc. So, they want to stop predatory practices and look great publicly without all the pain and misery on their side of the screen. So, they get to announce a big judgment, EDMC continues to make $, and pretty much everyone with money is happy to let things go on as before with a bit of new window dressing.

Compared with even a year ago there is so much more negative press against edmc. Getting off the hook with a 200million payout isn't going to save the company. Top students and professors are not going to be drawn to the schools. Edmc's reputation will keep getting worse. Of course they committed well documented fraud for years.

Westwood and Corinthian took there hits earlier and it was a slow burn till now. EDMC just took some big hits and this is the FINAL COUNT DOWN!
