None of this surprises me. I was tossed out by 3M like a piece of used toilet paper in 2009 along with 3500 others - only to learn that about 6 months later, they had refilled many of the positions of those they let go with millennials with little experience or work ethic. My distributors and customers kept in touch and told me that they could never get my replacement to return phone calls, and had even been stood up for planned meetings. Disgusting. 3M is a management-heavy organization whose management loves to pat themselves on the back and proclaim to themselves "what fine fellows we are".

The word at the 3M center in Austin is that they are going to sell the existing center and build a smaller one to accommodate the smaller work force that now exists in Austin. What is the business case for remaining in Austin?

The R&D group in 3M Austin has been decimated. All technical people involved have got layoff notices. However the incompetent management in charge still have secure jobs ! People with responsibilities whose incompetency led to such dramatic consequences for so many technical people with valuable skills and years of experience , face no consequences for their own inaction !

This is true in general of the layoffs announced in Oct, 2015. Technical people hit hard with layoffs while management mostly unaffected. Morale is at an all time low !

At the end of the day 3M is a technology company. This will adversely affect people doing the actual work ( lab bench technical people) for the company. If this continues, 3M will perhaps go the DuPont way !
