Lower demand for engines, that's what they told us. 2000 will lose jobs. That's about 4% of the total employee base. We have about 50,000 employees. Now, Linebarger will improve profits as he's cutting to the bone, and his bonus will surely go up - so good job there. Now we know how 2016 will look like and there will be no fun I can tell you that.

Layed off Engineers are black listed and can not return to the Cummins.
Other diesel companies hire them.
Outside of Cummins it is referred to as Diesel University.
I was laid off the year after I won and was ranked a "1". My manager changed 4 times in the 18 months before I was laid off in 2008. I can guarantee you that even in the act of laying off 100s of (American) engineers and professionals in 2015 (and there are more to come) that Cummins has hundreds of active green card applications. To be CEO of Cummins you have to hate America and American workers. This was true of Tim Solso, a self-described "'60s radical who got an MBA", and his successor Tom Linbarger, who passed the PC litmus test to get to his current position. Most of the board of directors of Cummins are Democratic party activists. They have mastered the art of appearing to be an empathetic company while ruining American lives and America itself.
Actually the layoff percentage was 10% of the professional workforce So far, all Cummins employees leaving while the lower paid contractors from India are kept. Some groups are over 50% contractors (who would be the first to go in a decent company) and they are still there. Instead of using contractors as a buffer against market fluctuations, Cummins cuts internally first. What kind of company does this?
Cummins managers play games with the forced ranking system, i.e., 1,2,3 ranking. If researched, top management could see that rankings change by manager, meaning am employee might be a 1 or 2 under their last manager and can go up or down under the new guy. Same employee same work, different results. And no one challenges a lower ranking submitted by a new manager. New managers tend to want to look progressive, tough, hardnosed, to their manager so are willing to throw a pretty good longer term employee under the bus. So, beware if they want to get rid of an employee they can simply designate them a 3 and poof, gone! No checks and balances.
Yeah, That is what they told us in 2000 when they cut 1500 Engineers. They cut those over 45 and replaced them with younger staff. I'll bet the same thing is happening now. Somebody keep track of who is being walked out. That approach was challenged by some mid managers in a law suite and they won. Sorry to see the jobs lost but this is a cyclic business reaction with regards to layoffs at CMI.
The job cuts are for professional, i.e., salaried employees--~25K. So, actual percentage cut will be closer to 8% of professional staff across global locations.
good luck
