I have seen this happen, they moved a $80,000 /yr GM to a locom, then complained about him making so much money in a low volume store. They eventually termed him on a technicality, then closed the store. Vinnie also went into a store while the GM was on vacation, ripped the AM a new asshole, and then transferred the GM a week later and cut their salary by $20k.
You are right on the money as usual Watching From Afar. I have seen this happen first hand. Vinnie Servello is ruthless, but he is just an apprentice to his lord, Darth Otis.
The question proves someone has figured out exactly what is going on. Now add one other thought. Yes some make 50k and some make 100k. They have moved the 100k GM's, whenever possible, into tier 3 and 4 stores THEY INTEND TO CLOSE! Now you know the rest of the story.
In our region we have lost at least 5 GMs this year, one of which was ours. We are a dying tier 4 store that the DM swears they are not closing. Three days ago we found out they hired us a new GM. A 28 year old GM. A 28 year old GM who is already getting personal phone calls at our store despite he still has 5 1/2 weeks training elsewhere. This will not end well!
I've seen anywhere from $50k to over $100k. Depends on Operating Profit, tenure, and luck.
Office Depot goes with the everyone makes $62,100. Doesn't matter how long you have been here. Our pay was cut, some of us 20% over a year ago.
I know a GM that was making $80k+ in a lowcom (what is now T4) 2 years ago, but he was fired for stupid reasons. Vinnie Servello took over the region from Madormo and made a "hit list" of GMs he felt made to much. The store would have been profitable if it did not have a $1 mill lawsuit against it from a trip and fall before the GM was placed there, so it was a huge uphill battle to try to show any profit after. They fired him for going in the building alone 5 minute before opening because the IS called out. I know a GM that ran a profitable T3 (up to a year ago) that was making $70k. DM was put on a PIP by Vinnie Servello and DM warned everyone to GTFO after he heard the changes coming down at a meeting. DM quit before being fired and 3/4 of the GMs in the district either quit or were fired by the replacement DM. There is a newly minted GM, hired off the street from Verizon that is making about $50k in that same T3 now.
