St. Mary's General Hospital

PASSAIC -- The union that represents staff at St. Mary's General Hospital said 20 nurses and technicians were told last week they will be laid off, according to NorthJersey.com.

News of the layoffs reportedly came in the midst of National Nurses Week.

The union filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board for not having a union representative when seven nurses and 13 technicians were informed of the layoffs last week, according to the report.

A hospital spokeswoman maintained that the staff members were properly notified and said the layoffs were partly a result of a decrease in state charity care funding, according to the report.

St. Mary's General Hospital is one of the county's largest employers with more than 500 physicians and 1,200 employees, according to its website.
