To everyone who does not know. This is a Government money making plan. You see, two of the major investors for EDMC are General Colin Powell and Olympia Snow (former senator). Now that they are out of public office, politicians who own parts of other schools want a piece of the pie. So, EDMC... sorry for your luck. Schools owned by other congressmen, senators and such will attack EDMC, and others, but will leave there schools alone... Even though, they will do the same thing EDMC did. They will just protect their schools like Powell and snow did.
As far as the law suits, they are junk. "Buyer beware" has been a cornerstone in U.S. law since its beginning. The customer is always responsible for their actions and what they buy. Buying education is no different. If you got a slick sale from a used car guy named Earl, you were still stuck with the junk car. Junk degrees are no different. Sorry customers, that is the way it is.
The 100million lawsuit that was settled. Well, it was originally a 1billion dollar lawsuit. Both the government and EDMC agreed on the 100m to cover court costs and fees. It was a huge WIN for EDMC. The government could prove NO wrongdoing.
The real issue is that many students cannot find jobs after graduation. This is true for EDMC schools as well as many others. The problem is jobs, not the education. The schools are doing what they have always done. The government is not. Letting millions of jobs go overseas is making things hard for the hundreds of thousands of people earning degrees every year to survive.
Another issue is the big schools. Online schools are eating there lunch and they are struggling. Even their graduates are having issues finding jobs. The big problem here is that now many potential students are going online because of the shootings/violence on campus, the flexibility of online, and the massive savings in cost. A bachelor degree at Pitt was reported at over 100k just in tuition while South University is a bit over 72k. I don't know about you, but saving 25k+ is a big deal for me and my family.
I have also met many people at Argosy and South University over the years and have found the majority of them to be very nice and very concerned about their students well being. My recruiter for my first college (A ground school - non-profit) Lied to me, tricked me, and fooled me to sign up for a program I did not really want and she got a bonus. WELCOME TO COLLGE. I guess that was lesson 1. For all those that think EDMC schools are the only ones doing this, you are very wrong.
Non-profits are way worse and they are being left alone. Why? How can a non-profit school pay a President 600k a year? WOW. look it up! Non-profit schools should be more affordable, but they are not. They should be held more accountable than for-profits because they get government tax breaks. It is harder for a for profit school to be profitable simply because of the tax savings and softer regulation. WHY? All schools should be treated the same, held accountable the same, and if you really want to know the worse part, the accrediting bodies just sit there and keep on accrediting lame schools. Where are their leaders and why are they not being hammered?
I could go on, but it does not matter. If politicians don't benefit from something, they just shut it down until all that is left is their money-making school. Thank you government for showing me again why we are failing as a country. Blame others, and scream "What's in it for me?".
