NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Apollo Education Group (APOL) stock is retreating 27.74% to $7.66 in afternoon trading on Thursday after the company posted earnings and revenue that missed estimates for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2015.

The private education provider reported adjusted earnings of 17 cents per share on revenue of $600.29 million for the quarter ended August 31.

Analysts had estimated earnings of 18 cents per share on $620.97 million in revenue for the quarter.

"Despite the difficult environment, we are executing on the dramatic steps we announced last quarter for theUniversity of Phoenix to become a more focused, higher retaining and less complex institution," CEO Greg Cappelli said in a statement.

Apollo Education also posted fiscal 2015 financial results, with adjusted earnings of $1.10 per share, beating estimates of $1.05 per share, and revenue of $2.57 billion, which fell below estimates of $2.6 billion.

The University of Phoenix owner expects its revenue to continue to decline in fiscal 2016, dropping to between $2.18 billion and $2.23 billion.

Separately, TheStreet Ratings team rates APOLLO EDUCATION GROUP INC as a Sell with a ratings score of D+. TheStreet Ratings Team has this to say about their recommendation:

We rate APOLLO EDUCATION GROUP INC (APOL) a SELL. This is driven by a number of negative factors, which we believe should have a greater impact than any strengths, and could make it more difficult for investors to achieve positive results compared to most of the stocks we cover. The company's weaknesses can be seen in multiple areas, such as its generally disappointing historical performance in the stock itself, feeble growth in its earnings per share, disappointing return on equity and weak operating cash flow.
