That "Bloomberg" quote makes no sense. If the FTC approved the merger with NO restrictions Staples would close distribution centers because they need to. They will need to as a result of closing many retail locations which is their plan and they will have no use for some of those distribution centers. The fact that the statement is so obviously un-informed makes me conclude it's bogus or the quote is taken out of context.
Anonymous181758 - That is perfect for Staples new business model(all third party,) so they'll probably keep BI, ha ha!
Staples Business Interiors is a laughing joke. Most of the assembly and deliveries are by a 3rd party team anyway.
OfficeMax might be hard to unwind this fair into their merger. Between Max and Depot, there's too many trade secrets the two of them now. My guess, Staples will sell off Business Interiors, they didn't want that business from the start of the Corporate Express merger, but, found out it was a profitable piece after the fact. They'd probably be happy to see it gone. Facilities are doubtful, they wanted CE for that business.
Staples has said it will go ahead with the assets sale only if necessary for the merger to win the antitrust review, according to Bloomberg.
"It looks to us like the deal will go through with some concessions," Oliver Wintermantel at Evercore ISI told Bloomberg. "Staples may need to get rid of Office Max or close distribution centers."
