Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Thread 2: Just got notified i was affected by reduction in force. Here is how it went down...

Got an IM from my direktor. This was very unusual since i have not been contacted by him directly for years, so i knew something was up. He asked me to come to a conference room because he had something important to discuss with me. When i got there, he sat me down and told me my position had been eliminated by the RIF. Im not too upset about it bc it feels like the timing is perfect. I think the climate at Q will b depressing afterwards. Regarding severance, it is the same as previous rounds; 2 months + 2 wks/year of employment. My last day of employment will be Nov 20

My severance is about $25million in front load RSU, 2 weeks + 2wks/year while bullshitting at Qualcomm. Wait.. i think might be a little delusional under stress.

Customer Engineering folks, is this CE HW (formerly under JimR) or CE SW (formerly under Sudeepto) or both? Former CE, now some other place else myself. I thought CE folks would be important enough for revenue generating products reasons

I just got the news. Same as everyone's, 2 months and 2 weeks per year of service. I saw a paper in my Manager's hand that has a list of people under him. Mine is a new group and I hear all new groups will be severely affected. Good luck everyone.

HR told me the Severance is being sent out after the first of the year so it will be taxed next year instead of this year. HR said it was being done this way because so many had asked for it to be done this way. Myself, I would rather have the severance Nov 20th, but I would really rather have a job before Nov 20th and give up the severance. A job is better than a severance package. Yes, it will be taxed at around 45% because the Government considers it a gift.

All managers are not being laid off I guess.

I forgot to add that I was also qualified to apply unemployment benefits after Nov 20th. I can only file my claim after Nov 20th when I will be "officially" unemployed.

same here.. same package.. the severance check will be sent out as a lump sum (might be taxed as a bonus! ~45%) a few days after Nov 20th.. any unused vacation hours or whatever will also be paid out (checks in the mail).. there is one minor detail that the OP might be forgetting.. If you find a new job before Nov 20th and decide to go for the new opportunity, you will forfeit your severance payout excluding other things.. because technically you are still employed until Nov 20th.. I think i interpreted correctly when I was delivered the news.. good luck, guys.. hope that Qcom will provide more generous packages for later rounds.. or they might run out of money and you guys will get less.. anywayssss.. good luck to all.. it was a nice ride!

Same as OP. I was ping-ed by director with the same pkg. Also they give a lump sum for health coverage for H1Bs

"Are you the only one in your group? Have they shared how big the hit to your group will be?" I'm in Customer Engineering. I have no idea if Im the only one, or impact to my group. Altho im assuming there were others affected also. "Is the severance of 2 months starting today or NOV. HOw about insurance?" As i understand, the severance is just a lump sum that will be distributed at the end of my employment.

In my case, I was called to an empty office. The Manager spoke for 5 minutes, the HR for 10 minutes.

Similar for me, except initial contact was by phone and the director, whom i see most every day, came to my office.
