BTW, I am not the same poster as SI boards.
But my colleague directly reported to SteveMo in Globalstar and later in RF systems from 1996- 2001. He clearly said that Steve used to be a genuinely good caring and approachable man back then, not at all now. Made a mention of how power corrupts...
What rumors I've heard (no guarantees of course!):
-
Layoff notices go out this week; Thursday timing yet unclear. A prediction I posted 4-5 months ago after 1st qtr guidance reduction but we'll see.
-
Growing recognition that the days of high margin, high end smartphone growth may really be over. The cheese has been moved, hence the larger layoff target goals and SM's talk of "pivoting" the company for which they have a terrible track record of finding any new growth areas IMHO.
-
Murthy has been and continues to be likely the least liked member of senior management due to his constant yelling at and berating subordinates management style. Given his role in the 810 problems I'm amazed he's still there and would not be surprised at a departure. He and Cristiano have never gotten along and are constantly infighting in one of the worst management structure decisions when SM made them co-presidents.
FWIW, I love the company and the people I knew there. It was the hardest but most fun and rewarding place I ever worked and those attributes usually go hand in hand. But I stopped holding QCOM stock 2.5 years ago and I'm not the only one I know who has left the company and sold all holdings.
What rumors I've heard Part 2 (no guarantees again):
Sorry I forgot to include a few other things in my last post.
-
Bldg N is supposed to be crawling with representatives from one of the big consulting firms. Sorry I've forgotten the firm's name. They are attending meetings, checking peoples calendars and asking detailed questions about folks work and jobs. "Why did you call this meeting?" "Why did you invite these people?" "What did you hope to accomplish?" Really looking over the shoulder of people which is adding to the low morale and anxiety. How they may be being plugged into the layoff scheme I don't know.
-
I've heard there might be a "title audit" going on with the idea of downgrading people's titles and the titles in the structure of the organization. The goal would be to eliminate many of the VP, Sr. Director, Director titles and either eliminate the job or downgrade the title of the incumbent.
-
There have been many long tenured VP level folks already laid off and jobs eliminated earlier in the year, especially in San Diego based App's Engineering (customer support) area.
It's not the company I knew for so long and I'm glad I retired and left when I did. I've not talked to one single happy QCOM'er that I know for the last couple of years. Well I take that back; on reflection some time ago I had lunch with a very senior engineering guy who was smiling and doing well but that's all.
