Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Trump supports giving every person with college degree an H1B visa. Millions to come to this country.

Trump in his book says:

"As an example, foreign students come over to our colleges, learn everything there is to learn about physics, finance, mathematics, and computers, and graduate with honors.

...

Wouldn't it be better if we invited foreign student graduating from our colleges to stay to build American companies....?"

@ 145527: No, you obviously missed the point. GCs are MUCH more strictly regulated than H1-B visas are. And fewer of them are given out.

Not all foreign students graduate with honors from good schools. So giving anyone who graduates from a us school citizenship is lunacy. What a joke.

The problem is that the benefits of an H1-B visa to potential immigrants is illusive. You get to come and work here for 3 years, renewable to 6 years, for which you often make only subsistence wages, while others with similar education and skills are paid more. So you are here long enough to help depress wages in your area of study, and at the end of 3 or 6 years you usually get sent back--because it's cheaper to replace you with a "new model" at the "starting salary," than to keep raising your pay rate. The H1-B visa and similar visas should be abolished for American STEM jobs. It's fairer to tell employers they have to hire them as green card applicants or depend on American talent. The green card process is too expensive for employers to hire bottom-of-the-barrel employees for less, and hope they can come up to speed in both technical and language skills. It is also a better way to protect IP from foreign countries. After all, if an employee thinks his visa won't be renewed, where's the incentive to be loyal to the company and not steal the companys confidential intellectual property? If they want cheap labor, they will ultimately take work overseas. They've done that since the 80's.
