Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Thoughts on Finance?

The e-mail from Jeff Sheets this morning makes it sound like Finance won't be hurt to bad until 2016. Maybe we can keep our jobs until VCIP time!

The rental market in Bartlesville will improve very quickly. No market to buy home so the only other option is to rent. Sad situation with the encouragement by management for people to purchase homes in Bartlesville. New hires out of college were encouraged to purchase homes with the expectation of a move in the future and a relocation in the future. The move is imminent with the layoffs but without a job and without a relocation package.

I would say if they offer to move you, move. There will likely be few, if any, paid relocations in this. If you get laid off in Bartlesville, you'll have a tough time finding anything that won't require a move anyway. Of course if the offer doesn't include paid relocation, the decision would be more difficult as moving is very expensive.

And they can offer to move those employees who they know are not mobile. If those people turn down the job offer then won't get severance. Beware of that tactic to avoid paying severances.

Where is your HSE group currently located - Bartlesville?

Do you know how expensive it is to move people? They will no doubt move what they can to Houston and hire new staff or absorb it if possible. I'm Finance embedded in a specialized HSE group and we were told our function was being moved to Houston. We started hotly debating the value of moving staff when it dawned on us that only the work was going to Houston.

If a person gets laid off they still get VCIP for the portion of time that was worked in 2015. Not that it is going to be much anyway.

The information collected in confidence via KPMG is not. Express no opinions to KPMG you would not say in a public forum with your supervisor and coworkers.

It sounds like additional layoffs are coming for finance in 2016, very disappointing that they are keeping everyone hanging for that long. Even more disappointing that they are paying KPMG to figure it out.

The communication gaps are disheartening.

Why are certain groups getting emails and others...nothing. No consistency!

KPMG is hired to be the hatchet man.

I thought the same thing, why spend money on KPMG? But it's really the only way ...otherwise no one will see the company objectively. If management could see what needed to be done to be more efficient, they would have already done it. They need someone else to make the call. I'm guessing they will find we need to cut a lot. I know a few people in finance that have told me they could do their job working 2 days a week. Yikes. But no one wants to say anything or they'll be let go.

Why do we have to hire consulting company KPMG to tell upper management what to do. How much are we paying Jeff Sheets and upper management? Making those decisions doesn't come as part of their pay and supposed expertise. Looks to me this is way for management to say "experts told us to do this" and they don't take blame for any unpopular decision. Beware of the experts.

I wouldn't be surprised if they moved all of the Bartlesville jobs to Houston. Sucks for Bartlesville, but it does make good business sense being in one location. I think everyone has known for a long time that was always a possibility.

Email leaves it wide open that moving Bartkesville to Houston is a very real scenario. Get prepared.

From email sounds to me like they are evaluating Bartlesville functions want to keep and move those to Houston. The purpose is to structure like other E&P companies and those don't have shared services location separate from headquarters like in bville.

This is in addition to the cost proj3ct, so in other words above and beyond the layoffs already planned.

That's not how I interpreted it. I don't think they will wait until 2016.

They probably want to implement SAP and then layoff everyone older than 45-50. They need the experience to successfully implement the project.
