Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Should I still do my normal Xmas shopping if I don't have a job lined up yet? I know that if anything happens, i'll have a 6mo+ severance, but..

...not having anything lined up creates uncertainty and I don't want to risk not being able to make mortgage payments in the spring, since hiring will only start to pick up by then. I'm thinking I could do something wholesome like volunteering at soup kitchens or homeless shelters over the holidays to avoid all the commercialism and put things in perspective. It is times like these that I wish I had a couple of rental properties to tie us over and give me more time to look for that job i really want rather than settling for the first opportunity

It was leaked that the severance for most people will be capped at 5 months, due to Qualcomm not having enough money put aside to pay everyone their lump sum and a full 2 weeks per year served.

Oh phluease!, that's like one week of food for a family of 4, dependent on a Q income in So Cal. What are we going to dine on the rest of the month?

IF you are laid off/terminated through no fault of your own, you are eligible for unemployment insurance. It's only $450 per week, but it at least covers groceries....

One of the best things about being Jewish is that X-mas is optional. But then if you have kids, there are 8 days of Hanukah to contend with. Buying presents for the holidays should be the least of your worries. Sock away as much as you can reasonably afford in savings, in case you don't find anything. Consider taking short term contract positions that will give you the flexibility to accept a F/T position within 30 days. As for X-mas, forget adults. Okay, maybe give a few close friends some choice bottles of wine or Scotch that you realistically won't be able to take with you if you move out of the area. No one really needs another tie or vase--or whatever the hell you normally buy them at the last minute-- because they already have everything. Buy a few small things each month as you see them on sale and put them away in your closet for the kids. Also, buy gift certificates in bulk at CostCo, or several in smaller denominations each month. That way each kid gets a "variety pack" for different stores that they like, and you don't have a bill for thousands in January.
